First time; Solo travel in October

I’m taking an unexpected trip to Palm Springs for 3 nights in mid-October (need to pick up a family member who will already be there). I will most likely be travelling alone, and I’ve never been there before! I’m treating myself to a few days of child-free R&R.

I won’t be going to bars at night, but I’m all for day drinking. I’d also like a nice pool (doesn’t need to be quiet) and unique/colorful decor and vibes. I will NOT be golfing! I’ll probably want to wander around downtown at least once. I will not have a car.

Where should I stay?? I’m guessing close to downtown is ideal for more meal options… but I’m on a somewhat limited budget (I’d love to spend less than ~$700USD total).

Any ideas for hotels or rentals or…?

Palm Springs is a fantastic choice for a short solo getaway, especially in mid-October when the weather is perfect for poolside relaxation. Since you won’t have a car, staying near downtown is indeed ideal for easy access to restaurants, cafes, and shops. For your preferences—day drinking, a lively but not overly quiet pool, unique decor, and a moderate budget—there are several options to consider.

Here are some hotels and rentals that fit your criteria:

  • Korakia Pensione: A charming boutique hotel with Moroccan and Mediterranean-inspired decor. Features beautiful pools and a tranquil yet vibrant vibe. Walking distance to downtown Palm Springs.
  • Desert Riviera Hotel: Located a short walk from downtown, this hotel has a colorful mid-century modern aesthetic, a nice pool area, and a lively atmosphere without being too noisy.
  • Royal Sun Inn: Budget-friendly with a quirky, colorful retro vibe. Offers a pool and is within easy walking distance of restaurants and shops in downtown.
  • Airbnb or VRBO rentals: Many private homes and condos near downtown offer mid-century modern interiors, private pools, and a vibrant atmosphere. Look for properties labeled as “mid-century modern” or “Palm Springs retro” for unique decor.

Other tips for your stay:

  • Consider booking a hotel or rental with a kitchenette or at least mini-fridge; it’s convenient for day drinking or light meals by the pool.
  • Downtown Palm Springs is very walkable, so you can easily explore restaurants, coffee shops, and boutique stores without a car.
  • Popular casual daytime spots include Lulu California Bistro, Cheeky’s for brunch, and The Tropicale for lunch or cocktails.
  • Poolside day-drinking is very much part of Palm Springs culture, so look for hotels with a social pool atmosphere rather than a quiet, secluded pool if you want some energy and interaction.

With a budget under $700 for three nights, prioritize mid-century boutique hotels or smaller retro properties; many offer deals in mid-October, especially for solo travelers. Booking early or checking last-minute specials can help you find something stylish yet affordable near downtown.

Overall, aim for a centrally located property with a pool and unique decor to maximize your solo R&R, easy access to food and drinks, and the iconic Palm Springs vibe.
