Spring trip to Yosemite
We have 3 nights at the Ahwahnee in late April and I would appreciate input on how best to arrange our three days. We are interested in easy to medium level hikes and we will have a car. I am also interested in suggestions for other sites to see in the area after we leave the park.
With three nights at the Ahwahnee in late April, you have a wonderful opportunity to explore Yosemite Valley and nearby areas at a relaxed pace. Since you have a car and are looking for easy to medium hikes, I’ve outlined a suggested itinerary and some additional sites to visit after leaving the park.
Day 1 – Arrival and Yosemite Valley Highlights:
- Check into the Ahwahnee and get settled.
- Take a short drive or shuttle to Yosemite Valley viewpoints like Tunnel View and Valley View for iconic photos.
- Consider a gentle walk to Lower Yosemite Falls (0.5 miles round trip) or Bridalveil Fall (0.5 miles round trip) for easy first-day hikes.
- Optional picnic or light dinner in the valley or return to the Ahwahnee for a historic dining experience.
Day 2 – Moderate Hikes and Scenic Spots:
- Morning: Hike the Mist Trail to Vernal Fall Footbridge (1.5 miles round trip) or continue to Vernal Fall and Nevada Fall if you are comfortable (moderate, 3–7 miles depending on destination).
- Afternoon: Explore Mirror Lake (easy 2–5 mile round trip depending on how far you walk) or relax near the Merced River.
- Evening: Drive to Glacier Point for sunset if roads are open (late April sometimes still limited by snow), offering sweeping valley views.
Day 3 – Mariposa Grove of Giant Sequoias and Wawona Area:
- Drive to Mariposa Grove (allow 1–2 hours including shuttle if operational). Enjoy easy walks among the giant sequoias; Grizzly Giant Loop is about 2 miles and suitable for most visitors.
- Optional hike: Big Trees Trail (1 mile loop, very easy).
- Stop by Wawona and visit the Pioneer Yosemite History Center or relax near the Wawona Hotel grounds.
- Return to the Ahwahnee or valley for a relaxed dinner and final evening in the park.
Additional Sites Nearby After Leaving Yosemite:
- Tioga Pass / Tuolumne Meadows – Stunning alpine scenery if roads are open (late April access may be limited due to snow).
- Hetch Hetchy Reservoir – Less crowded, gentle hiking options, about 1–2 hour drive from the valley.
- Mono Lake and Bodie State Historic Park – If you are driving east toward Highway 395, these are unique natural and historic stops.
- Calaveras Big Trees State Park – On your way back toward the Bay Area or other destinations, offers additional giant sequoia groves without the crowds.
Tips:
- Check road and trail conditions before your trip, especially for Glacier Point and Tioga Road in spring.
- Use the park shuttle in Yosemite Valley where possible to minimize parking stress.
- Layered clothing is recommended, as April can have variable temperatures and occasional snow in higher elevations.
This itinerary balances easy to moderate hikes with scenic drives and iconic Yosemite experiences, while also allowing time for relaxation and enjoyment of the Ahwahnee.
