Rafting
We are going to be in Yosemite on 6/18 and were planning on going to Curry Village to rent a raft to float down the Merced in the Valley. I'm having a hard time finding online if the conditions are going to be okay for this? Thanks in advance!
Rafting on the Merced River in Yosemite Valley is a classic summer activity, and mid-June can be a great time to go, but conditions depend on the spring snowmelt and recent weather.
Here’s what to consider for June 18:
- Water Levels: By mid-June, the Merced River is typically running high due to snowmelt from the Sierra Nevada. This makes for a fun float but can also make some areas faster and a bit more challenging. The river is generally calm through the Valley section, so it’s suitable for casual rafting.
- Temperature: Water temperatures can be cold, often in the 40s–50s Fahrenheit, so wearing a wetsuit or water-appropriate clothing is recommended to stay comfortable.
- Raft Rentals at Curry Village: Curry Village rents single and double rafts along with life jackets. Rentals usually open in late May or early June, depending on the snowmelt and staffing. It’s advisable to call ahead to confirm availability and any restrictions for the specific date.
- Safety Considerations: Always wear a life jacket, stay within designated rafting areas, and check for any posted warnings at the Curry Village rental station or the park’s visitor center.
- Alternative Options: If conditions are too high or the rental service is not yet open, consider kayaking tours or guided float trips offered by park-approved vendors.
In summary, June 18 is usually good for floating down the Merced River in Yosemite Valley, but call Curry Village in advance to confirm raft availability and check current river conditions. Dressing appropriately for cold water and following safety guidance will make the experience enjoyable and safe.
