Presidio Hotels

I wonder if anyone could kindly tell me how difficult staying at one of the Presidio hotels would be for easy access to the downtown and Fisherman's Wharf areas. We won't have a car and generally like to walk to places. Many thanks

Staying at a hotel in the Presidio of San Francisco can be a beautiful experience, as it is a scenic, historic area with plenty of green space, trails, and views of the Golden Gate Bridge. However, it is somewhat removed from the main tourist hubs, so accessibility without a car requires planning.

Here’s what to consider regarding access to downtown and Fisherman’s Wharf:

  • Walking: Walking from the Presidio to downtown or Fisherman’s Wharf is generally not practical for most visitors. Distances range from 3–5 miles depending on your hotel location, and while it is walkable for some, the terrain is hilly and could be tiring, especially if you plan to sightsee.
  • Public Transit: The Presidio is served by several Muni bus lines. For example, the #43 and #30 buses can connect you to downtown areas and transit hubs. However, bus frequency can be limited, especially on weekends, and you may need to transfer to reach Fisherman’s Wharf efficiently.
  • Shuttle Services: The Presidio has a free PresidiGo Shuttle that connects key points within the Presidio to nearby transit stops. You could use it to get closer to downtown and then transfer to other public transit options.
  • Rideshare / Taxi: For convenience, especially in the evenings or when carrying luggage, Uber and Lyft are available and can get you to downtown or Fisherman’s Wharf in about 10–20 minutes, depending on traffic.
  • Bike Options: If you enjoy cycling, the Presidio is bike-friendly and there are dedicated paths that connect to areas like Crissy Field and eventually the Marina District, which is closer to Fisherman’s Wharf. From there, you could continue by foot or transit.

In summary, the Presidio is more isolated than central neighborhoods like Union Square, the Financial District, or Fisherman’s Wharf. Without a car, you’ll rely on buses, the PresidiGo Shuttle, or rideshare. It’s perfect if you value a quieter, scenic stay, but less convenient for walking to the main tourist spots.

  • If your priority is easy walking access to restaurants, shops, and major attractions, consider staying in Union Square, North Beach, or Fisherman’s Wharf instead.
  • If you love the tranquility, history, and views of the Presidio, just plan for a combination of buses, shuttles, and occasional rideshare trips.

Ultimately, staying in the Presidio can be a wonderful experience, but it’s best suited for visitors comfortable using public transit or rideshare to reach the main attractions.
