Hotels Comparisons
Looking at Catamaran and Bahia Hotels. I realize they are sister properties.
My question is: Which one of them is closest (within walking distance) to restaurants and shopping. (Teen daughter with me).
Also, I have been reading that Catamaran has been doing "some" renovations but not all rooms are in the best of shape, according to some reviewers. The word is "dated," among other comments. Any input on that topic?
Is Bahia more modern? Lastly, which of them is close to the Pacific Ocean Beach - how far to walk?
Any other comments would be most appreciated. Thank you!
Thank
Both the Catamaran Resort and Spa and the Bahia Resort Hotel in San Diego are located in the Mission Bay area and are part of the same hospitality group, but they do offer different experiences and conveniences.
Proximity to Restaurants and Shopping:
- Bahia Resort Hotel: Closer to Mission Bay pathways and a small selection of nearby casual restaurants, but for a wider variety of shops and dining, you’ll likely need to drive or take a short ride to Pacific Beach or Mission Beach areas.
- Catamaran Resort: A bit more removed from the main restaurant and shopping areas. It’s primarily a resort experience with onsite dining, boutique shops, and lagoon access rather than urban walkability.
Room Condition / Renovations:
- Catamaran Resort: Has been undergoing renovations, but not all rooms are updated yet. Some reviewers note that rooms can feel “dated” in certain areas, though the resort maintains good amenities and waterfront views.
- Bahia Resort Hotel: Generally considered more updated and “modern” compared to Catamaran. Rooms and public areas have received more consistent updates, giving a fresher look.
Proximity to Pacific Ocean / Beach Access:
- Bahia Resort Hotel: Located near the southern end of Mission Bay, walking to the ocean is possible but may take about 10–15 minutes to reach Pacific Beach shoreline depending on the route.
- Catamaran Resort: Sits directly on the lagoon, with easy access to water activities, but walking to the Pacific Ocean proper (ocean beach) takes longer, roughly 15–20 minutes by foot.
Other Considerations:
- Both resorts offer resort-style amenities including pools, spa services, and water sports rentals, which can be great for teens and families.
- If having a more modern room and slightly better access to local shops/restaurants is a priority, Bahia may be the better option.
- If your family prefers a more immersive resort and water-oriented experience, the Catamaran’s lagoon setting is appealing, though some rooms may feel older.
In summary, Bahia offers a more modern feel and is a bit more convenient for walking to local restaurants and shops, while Catamaran provides a scenic, water-focused resort experience but may require more driving or longer walks to ocean beaches and dining.
