Chances tomorrow (3/14)

Arriving at GC (via East Entrance) tomorrow around 11am. I see it snowing today (via webcams). I also see (from weather.com) that it will continue to snow until 1am. What are my chances tomorrow of getting any sightseeing done (even if it means just going from lookout point to lookout point in the shuttle?)

Also when it snows are the chances of Desert View Dr being closed high?

Appreciate the help.

Arriving at Grand Canyon via the East Entrance tomorrow morning after a snowy day can still offer good sightseeing opportunities, though conditions will depend on how much snow accumulates overnight and how quickly the park crews can clear roads and parking areas.

Here’s what to expect and tips for planning:

  • Shuttle sightseeing: The park’s South Rim shuttle system generally operates even in light snow, but delays are possible. If roads are clear, you should still be able to ride from viewpoint to viewpoint, such as Desert View, Mather Point, Yaki Point, and Hopi Point.
  • Desert View Drive: This road is usually open even during winter, but snow and ice can make driving slower. Complete closures are uncommon unless there is significant snow accumulation or hazardous conditions. Carry tire chains or ensure your rental car is winter-ready.
  • Trail hiking: Snow will make some trails slippery, particularly Bright Angel and South Kaibab. Short rim walks are typically safe, but exercise caution and wear appropriate footwear.

Other recommendations:

  • Start early: Morning is usually colder and may have icy patches; mid-to-late morning conditions often improve as the sun melts snow on cleared paths and roads.
  • Layered clothing: Temperatures at the rim can be much colder than in the valleys; gloves, hats, and waterproof footwear are recommended.
  • Be flexible: Depending on snowfall overnight, be ready to adjust plans—focus on easily accessible viewpoints if roads are slippery.
  • Check live webcams and the official park website early tomorrow for updated road and shuttle conditions before heading out.

In summary, your chances of sightseeing are reasonably good, especially if your plan is limited to shuttle-accessible viewpoints and short walks along the rim. Desert View Drive closures are unlikely but slow-going due to snow and ice is possible. With proper winter gear and cautious driving, you should still be able to enjoy the iconic vistas of the Grand Canyon.
