Hong Kong attractions and Disneyland in January ?

Would it be OK to visit Hong Kong in mid - late January?

I'm thinking maybe 1-2 weeks?

Would we find enough to do?

We would like to spend 2-3 days at Disneyland, I know it's small but we are a "disney family" so will enjoy 2-3 days there.

Are theme parks easy to get to?

Where should we stay?

This time of year both the kids and my husband are off school / work so it works perfectly for us to travel.

Visiting Hong Kong in mid-to-late January is generally a good time, especially for families. The weather is cool and dry, with temperatures ranging from about 15°C to 20°C (59°F to 68°F). It's comfortable for walking around the city and visiting outdoor attractions, though you may want light jackets for the mornings and evenings. Rainfall is relatively low, making sightseeing pleasant.

For a 1–2 week stay, there is plenty to do in Hong Kong beyond Disneyland. You can combine cultural attractions, shopping, outdoor exploration, and family-friendly activities.

  • Disneyland: Spending 2–3 days is reasonable if you want to enjoy most rides, shows, and parades. The park is small compared to other Disney resorts, so a couple of days would be enough, but three days allows a more relaxed pace.
  • Other attractions: Include Ocean Park for marine life and rides, Ngong Ping Cable Car and Tian Tan Buddha, Victoria Peak via Peak Tram, Star Ferry, Avenue of Stars, and interactive museums like the Hong Kong Science Museum for kids.
  • Shopping & street markets: Mong Kok for toys and electronics, Ladies Market, Temple Street Night Market, and malls like Harbour City in Tsim Sha Tsui.

Theme park accessibility: Both Disneyland and Ocean Park are easy to reach via public transport. Disneyland has a dedicated MTR line (Disneyland Resort Line) from Sunny Bay Station. Ocean Park is reachable via bus or taxi; shuttle buses are available from main hotels.

Accommodation recommendations:

  • Tsim Sha Tsui: Great for shopping, dining, and easy access to the Star Ferry. Central location for sightseeing in Hong Kong Island.
  • Central or Wan Chai: Convenient for MTR access, restaurants, and quick travel to other attractions.
  • Disneyland area: Consider staying at a Disneyland Resort hotel for 2–3 days to maximize park time and convenience for young children.

For transportation, the MTR system is efficient, and taxis are available but more expensive. Purchasing an Octopus card for convenient metro, bus, and even some ferry payments is highly recommended. Overall, mid-January offers pleasant weather, manageable crowds (except Chinese New Year if it falls in late January), and enough attractions to fill 1–2 weeks for a family trip.
