Great Wall
Hi
Looking at best options for myself and wife
Both early 60’s and generally fit
My wife though is always wary of anything too steep and uneven
Is there a good option in walking part of the wall, were it is not ridiculously steep
I have watched multiple Vlogs, and some parts look really steep and difficult to manage, and other parts appear OK
Also is it easier in going as part of a tour group, or just doing it ourselves by getting a taxi
Any help appreciated
Visiting the Great Wall near Beijing offers a variety of sections, some steep and rugged, others more gently restored and easy to walk. Since you and your wife are in your early 60s and your wife prefers to avoid steep or uneven terrain, choosing the right section is key to an enjoyable experience.
1. Recommended sections for easier walking
- Mutianyu Great Wall: This section is very popular among visitors seeking a less strenuous experience. It has been fully restored, the steps are evenly spaced, and there are handrails in most areas. A cable car or chair lift can take you up, so you can avoid climbing the steepest parts. You can walk along flat stretches at your own pace and enjoy scenic views without overexertion.
- Badaling Great Wall: The most famous and closest section to Beijing, with excellent facilities and wide, even paths. It’s heavily visited and may feel crowded, but it is well maintained and suitable for older visitors. There are shuttle buses from the parking lot, and steep areas are limited to short sections.
- Jinshanling (partial walk): This section is less crowded and very scenic. It has some steeper areas, but you can choose to walk only the restored parts that are easier. Avoiding the unrestored, rugged stretches will keep the walk manageable.
2. Getting there: tour group vs. independent travel
Both options are feasible, but each has advantages depending on your priorities:
- Tour group: Provides convenience, transport, and sometimes a guide who can offer historical insights. Good if you prefer not to navigate taxis, maps, or tickets yourself. Often includes hotel pickup/drop-off and lunch.
- Independent travel: Taking a taxi or private car directly to the Wall gives you flexibility with timing. You can choose how long to stay and which parts to walk. This is ideal if you want to avoid crowds and move at your own pace, especially important for avoiding steep climbs or fatigue.
3. Tips for a comfortable visit
- Use the cable car or chair lift to ascend and descend if available, particularly at Mutianyu.
- Wear comfortable walking shoes and bring water.
- Visit early in the morning or later in the afternoon to avoid crowds and heat.
- Consider hiring a private guide or driver if you go independently; it simplifies logistics and provides flexibility for resting or adjusting your pace.
4. Summary recommendation
For a couple in their early 60s who want to avoid steep, uneven walking, Mutianyu Great Wall is generally the best choice, offering well-maintained paths, cable car access, and scenic views. Badaling is also suitable if convenience and proximity to Beijing are priorities. Independent travel by taxi or private car provides flexibility, while a tour group offers ease and guided experience. Avoid steep sections or unrestored areas, and plan for a relaxed pace to fully enjoy the visit.
