Uber/Lyft from Tampa International to Universal/Disney
So….. we booked flights to Tampa instead of Orlando as it’s saving us quite a lot of money even with the extra cost of a taxi (from my searches on uber etc..). The big concern I now have after reading some reviews online is how hard it is to get a driver to accept the journey. Has anyone got any experience? (We won’t be renting a car).
Taking an Uber or Lyft from Tampa International Airport (TPA) to Universal or Disney World in Orlando is definitely possible, but there are a few things to keep in mind, especially with regard to availability and pricing. Since the distance is about 75-90 minutes (roughly 70 miles), the trip can be a bit of a challenge for drivers depending on demand, so it's good to be prepared.
Here's what you can expect based on others' experiences and my understanding of the area:
- Availability of Drivers: While it’s not uncommon for rideshare drivers to accept longer trips, there are reports from some passengers that drivers might be hesitant to take rides that are too far, especially during busy times. However, it’s also true that many drivers are happy to accept these long rides if they know they’ll be compensated fairly. In general, Uber and Lyft both allow you to check availability beforehand via the app, so you can see if there are drivers available for your trip when you're ready to book.
- Cost Considerations: The fare for an Uber or Lyft from Tampa to Orlando can vary depending on factors like time of day, demand, and the type of ride you select. Expect the price to range from $100 to $150 for a standard ride (UberX or Lyft Standard). Premium options (like UberXL or Lyft XL) will cost more. During peak travel times or surge pricing, the cost can rise significantly, so it’s something to keep in mind when budgeting for your trip.
- Long Trip Factors: The trip from Tampa to Orlando is a long one, and sometimes drivers may be hesitant to accept the ride due to the distance, especially if they’d have to return to Tampa afterward without a passenger (deadheading). However, if you check availability well in advance and there are no surge pricing issues, it should be fairly easy to book a ride. Drivers may also prefer shorter, local trips, so it's advisable to check the app a bit before you plan on leaving, just to be sure you have time to get a driver.
That said, many travelers do use Uber and Lyft for this trip, and it’s often a convenient and comfortable way to get from Tampa to the theme parks without having to rent a car. Here are a couple of tips:
- Booking in Advance: If possible, try to check your ride options ahead of time through the Uber or Lyft apps to see how many drivers are available for long-distance trips. Booking in advance might help secure a ride, though not all drivers may be willing to accept it without a nearby drop-off.
- Consider Alternatives: If you're worried about ride availability, another option is using a shuttle service or private car service. Companies like Mears Transportation and SuperShuttle offer shared or private rides from Tampa to Orlando’s theme parks. While slightly more expensive than a standard Uber/Lyft, they offer reliable, pre-arranged service.
- Rideshare Apps in Different Cities: Since Tampa and Orlando are two different cities, you might find a difference in the number of available drivers. Be sure to check the app in both cities to ensure that there are plenty of drivers available when you're ready to book your ride.
Overall, while there can sometimes be challenges getting a rideshare driver to accept a long trip, it is possible, and many people do this route successfully. Just be sure to check the availability, price, and time of day before you book to ensure a smooth experience. If Uber or Lyft doesn’t work out, shuttle services are a good backup option.
