South rim mule rides - good option right now?

We’re bringing a 12- & 14-year-old to the South Rim next ca weekend. What are the conditions for a mule ride along the rim (not into the canyon)? Is it icy in any spots?

Mule rides along the South Rim of the Grand Canyon can be a fun experience for families with kids, especially if you are not planning to descend into the canyon. They provide a guided, safe way to enjoy rim views without much physical exertion.

Current conditions:

In late March, the South Rim can still be chilly, and mornings or shaded areas may have patches of ice, particularly along less-traveled parts of the rim trail. However, the mule rides themselves are operated by the Grand Canyon Mule Ride program, which keeps trails safe and manageable. The rim rides are shorter and less steep than the canyon rides, so icy conditions are usually not a major concern, but layers and sturdy footwear are recommended.

Tips for families with kids:

  • Rides along the rim are suitable for your 12- and 14-year-old; they are generally calm and do not involve strenuous hiking.
  • Dress in layers, as temperatures can fluctuate quickly, and bring gloves and hats for early morning rides.
  • Check with the official Grand Canyon Mule Ride reservation desk for any last-minute trail condition updates, especially if there has been recent snowfall or freezing temperatures.
  • Book in advance, as rim rides are popular on weekends and can fill quickly, especially during spring break and early spring weekends.

Additional considerations:

  • The rides provide excellent views of the canyon along the rim, without going into the steep areas, so they are safer for families.
  • If conditions are icy, staff may adjust the route slightly or provide extra guidance, so the experience remains safe.
  • Even if you skip the canyon descent, the rim ride offers a great way to experience the landscape from the perspective of a mule, which is unique and memorable for kids.

Overall, a South Rim mule ride this time of year is generally a good option. Just dress warmly, wear appropriate footwear, and confirm conditions the day before your ride for peace of mind.
