Hollywood Boulevard to Santa Monica via public transport

Hi

During our few days in LA we are thinking of visiting Santa Monica using public transport. I've researched route options, which seem to be: bus 217 La Cienenga / Jefferson Station - then E Metro to SM; Metro B to 7th Street then Metro E to SM; Bus 4 from Santa Monica Blvd and N Orange to SM.

I know these all take at least 90 minutes, and the at the Metro rail option takes us all the way via downtown. We're quite happy to watch the city go by (obviously not on Line B). I don't really want to rent a car.

My question is, how safe are each of these routes during day time? I've read so many conflicting opinions.

Thanks

Traveling from Hollywood Boulevard to Santa Monica via public transportation is entirely feasible, and during daytime hours, it is generally considered safe if you follow basic precautions. Los Angeles transit can be busy, but most riders use it without issues, especially on well-traveled routes.

Route options and considerations:

  • Bus 217 to La Cienega / Jefferson Station, then Metro E to Santa Monica: This is a longer route with transfers, but it mostly follows main streets and major stops. During the day, stations and buses are well-trafficked. Keep an eye on personal belongings, as buses can get crowded.
  • Metro B to 7th Street, then Metro E to Santa Monica: This route goes through downtown LA, which can be a bit more crowded and busy, but it is standard for commuters. Daytime travel is typically safe; the main caution is to stay aware in transfer areas and avoid isolated sections of stations.
  • Bus 4 along Santa Monica Blvd from N Orange: This is the most direct surface option but can be slower due to traffic. Santa Monica Blvd is a major artery, so daytime buses are frequent and generally safe. Again, keep an eye on bags and personal items.

Safety tips for daytime travel:

  • Stick to well-populated stations and bus stops.
  • Keep your personal belongings in sight and secure.
  • Use official Metro apps or Google Maps to track arrival times and avoid long waits at isolated stops.
  • Traveling with companions can increase comfort and safety.

Additional considerations:

  • All routes will take roughly 90 minutes or slightly longer depending on traffic and transfers.
  • Riding the Metro through downtown can give you a good view of the city and is standard for many commuters.
  • If you want a more scenic surface route, Bus 4 is a reasonable option, as it mostly follows Santa Monica Boulevard.

Overall, any of these daytime public transit options are acceptable for visitors. Just remain alert, plan your transfer points ahead, and enjoy the ride through the city.
