First visit to Colorado

My husband and I are planning to fly to Colorado from Boston in late July with our two adult sons. This will be our first time to Colorado. We only have 5 days/4 nights and would like a taste of the beauty of the state. We really have no idea where to land in Colorado. People have suggested Aspen, Colorado Springs, Boulder, Breckenridge - basically all over the place. We would like to do short hikes, see gorgeous scenery, take part in outdoor activities or anything interesting the town has to offer. We would also like it to be a fun town to explore, with local shops and good restaurants. Can you help point us in the right direction?

For a first-time, 5-day trip to Colorado with your adult sons, you want to maximize your experience of the mountains, outdoor activities, and local culture without spending too much time driving. Given your interests in short hikes, gorgeous scenery, and vibrant towns, a few areas stand out as ideal bases.

Landing airport choices and areas to consider:

  • Denver/Boulder area: Flying into Denver gives you access to both the city and the nearby Rocky Mountains. Boulder is a fun, walkable town with shops, restaurants, and easy access to trailheads. Nearby hikes like Chautauqua Park or Flatirons offer short but scenic options. You could do day trips to Estes Park and Rocky Mountain National Park for stunning mountain vistas.
  • Breckenridge/Frisco/Dillon: If you want more of a mountain resort experience, fly into Denver and drive 1.5–2 hours to Breckenridge. Breckenridge has a charming historic downtown, plenty of shops and restaurants, and access to easy hikes. You could also take scenic drives along Hoosier Pass or visit nearby towns like Frisco or Keystone.
  • Aspen/Maroon Bells area: Flying into Aspen is perfect if your focus is high-altitude scenery and luxury mountain towns. Aspen itself has great shops and dining, and Maroon Bells offers easy, iconic hikes with stunning views. You could spend most of your 4 nights here if you want to minimize driving.
  • Colorado Springs/Pikes Peak: Flying into Colorado Springs allows for iconic Colorado sightseeing without too much hiking effort. Garden of the Gods provides beautiful rock formations with short trails. Pikes Peak and the Broadmoor area add scenic drives and resorts. The town has a decent downtown with shops and restaurants, though less bustling than Aspen or Boulder.

Suggested approach for a 5-day trip:

  • Option 1 – Denver/Boulder base: Fly into Denver, spend a night in the city, then move to Boulder or Estes Park. Day trips to Rocky Mountain National Park and short hikes, plus local dining in Boulder. Great balance of town life and scenery.
  • Option 2 – Mountain resort base: Fly into Denver, drive to Breckenridge or Aspen, spend all nights there. Focus on short hikes, scenic drives, and exploring mountain town culture. Minimal driving between locations.
  • Option 3 – Colorado Springs base: Fly into Colorado Springs, explore Garden of the Gods, Pikes Peak, and nearby attractions. Less mountain resort atmosphere, more iconic scenery and accessible trails.

Recommendations for short hikes and scenic experiences:

  • Chautauqua Park (Boulder) – multiple short, scenic trails with Flatiron views.
  • Bear Lake or Alberta Falls (Rocky Mountain National Park) – easy, scenic hikes near Estes Park.
  • Maroon Bells Scenic Loop (Aspen) – iconic, short hikes with alpine lake and peak views.
  • Garden of the Gods (Colorado Springs) – several short trails among striking red rock formations.
  • Breckenridge Peaks Trail or Sawmill Reservoir Trail – easy hikes with mountain and lake scenery.

In summary, for a first-time trip with limited days, consider choosing either a Denver/Boulder base with day trips to the mountains, or pick a single mountain resort town like Aspen or Breckenridge to minimize driving while still enjoying hiking, scenery, and a lively town experience. Each option provides good restaurants, local shops, and plenty of opportunities for short hikes and outdoor activities.
