Christmas in Winter park/Aspen/ or Breckenridge?
Hi! We have been spending Christmas in Estes Park the past few years and love it due to the small town, not overly crowded, laid back, Christmasy feel and of course RMNP. This year we want to try a new place for Christmas. We like to snow tube but aren’t skiers. Will Aspen and Breck be too crowded to deal with?
Any suggestions are appreciated! Can anything top Estes?
Thank you!!
If you love Estes Park for its small-town, laid-back Christmas charm and proximity to Rocky Mountain National Park, moving to a new Colorado destination for the holidays can be exciting but requires weighing crowds and activities. Aspen, Breckenridge, and Winter Park each offer unique experiences, though they are generally busier than Estes Park around Christmas.
Here’s a breakdown of your options:
- Breckenridge: Breck has a charming historic downtown with festive lights and family-friendly events. Snow tubing is available at the Adventure Park at Breckenridge Ski Resort, and there are additional winter activities like ice skating and sleigh rides. However, it is a very popular destination during Christmas week, so lodging and dining spots can be crowded. The town is walkable, which helps, but traffic and parking can be challenging.
- Aspen: Aspen is beautiful during the holidays, with upscale dining, boutique shopping, and excellent snow activities. There are snow tubing options nearby at Snowmass or Aspen Highlands. That said, Aspen tends to attract a high-end crowd, and it is quite busy and expensive over Christmas. Small-town charm is present, but it may feel more bustling than Estes Park.
- Winter Park: Winter Park is smaller than Breckenridge and Aspen and is more low-key. The resort has snow tubing, scenic gondola rides, and family-oriented activities. Crowds are present but generally easier to manage than Breckenridge or Aspen. Lodging is often more affordable, and the town retains a cozy feel compared to the bigger resorts.
Additional tips and alternatives:
- If you want a quiet, charming Christmas similar to Estes Park, Winter Park or nearby Fraser may be closer to what you’re used to, with smaller crowds and still offering tubing and winter fun.
- Booking accommodations early is essential if you choose Breckenridge or Aspen, as they sell out quickly during Christmas week.
- Consider visiting smaller mountain towns like Leadville or Glenwood Springs for a mix of winter activities without the heavy crowds. Both offer scenic charm, tubing, and snow-based adventures.
- Traffic and parking are key considerations: Breckenridge and Aspen can have limited parking near activity areas, so staying within walking distance of the main street or resort base is recommended.
In summary, while Aspen and Breckenridge offer beautiful scenery and lots of snow activities, they are busier and more commercialized than Estes Park. Winter Park or smaller nearby towns may offer a better balance of Christmas charm, snow tubing, and manageable crowds for a family-friendly holiday experience. Ultimately, if your priority is the cozy, small-town feel with festive ambiance, Winter Park or similar smaller towns may come closest to topping Estes Park for your Christmas trip.
