How does Ouray Via Ferrata compare to Telluride. We want to do both! PS. We're both old rock climbers from the gunks so we have experience!
Both Ouray and Telluride offer excellent Via Ferrata experiences, but they have distinct characteristics and appeal to different types of climbers and adventurers.
Ouray Via Ferrata is located in the stunning San Juan Mountains and is famous for its dramatic waterfalls and proximity to the town of Ouray, often called the "Switzerland of America." The route is built into a cliff above Ouray and provides spectacular views of the town and surrounding peaks. It's accessible, well-maintained, and guided tours are highly recommended, especially if you want to maximize safety and enjoy the history and geology along the route.
Telluride’s Via Ferrata, on the other hand, is less crowded and offers a more rugged, alpine experience. It tends to be longer and more physically demanding, with steeper sections and higher elevation exposure. The views over the Telluride valley are incredible, and it has a wilder, more backcountry feel than Ouray. Guides are available, and advanced climbers may enjoy the challenge of some of the more technical sections.
For climbers coming from the Gunks, Ouray may feel more structured and scenic, ideal for a half-day adventure, whereas Telluride provides a more remote, technical, and adventurous experience. Doing both gives you a great contrast—Ouray’s accessibility and scenery versus Telluride’s rugged challenge.
Overall, both Via Ferratas are world-class experiences. Ouray is more scenic and beginner-friendly in terms of logistics, while Telluride offers a wilder, more technical adventure. Your prior rock climbing experience will make both enjoyable and allow you to appreciate the technical and scenic aspects fully.
