Help- Everbright City or Bell Tower area?
Hello,
I will be in Xi'an for several days in May. I can't decide where to stay. Everbright City or City Wall area? I would like to stay somewhere that is nice to walk. I don't plan to just go place-to place since I have a lot of time. I enjoy people watching, little shops (including quick shops for any needs) , quiet streets & busy streets, interesting architecture. I will be bringing my teenage sons.
I think they would enjoy Everbright City, but looking at Google Maps I don't see much by our hotel choice.E-Charm No.418 Xiying Road, is affordable with a large 3 bed family room. It looks like all modern buildings, isolated, no small shops, streets or neighborhoods. I don't want to wind up isolated or needing to take a metro for each meal or shopping need.
What is everyone's suggestion?
For a stay in Xi'an focused on walking, exploring streets, and enjoying local life, the choice between Everbright City and the Bell Tower/City Wall area depends largely on your priorities and your family’s interests.
Everbright City:
- Primarily a modern residential and commercial area with high-rise buildings. Streets tend to be wider, less atmospheric, and less historic.
- Limited small shops, local eateries, and cultural sights. Most amenities are in modern malls or chain stores.
- For your teenage sons, there may be some entertainment options in large malls, but you won’t find the charm of older neighborhoods or street-level cultural experiences.
- Metro or taxi will likely be needed for most sightseeing and dining outside the immediate modern area.
Bell Tower / City Wall Area:
- Historic heart of Xi'an with narrow streets, bustling pedestrian zones, and lots of small shops, street food stalls, and traditional architecture.
- Excellent for walking, people-watching, and spontaneous exploration. You can easily wander the Muslim Quarter, find quirky local shops, and enjoy the city’s vibrant atmosphere.
- Close to major attractions such as the City Wall, Drum Tower, Bell Tower, and many temples. Restaurants and convenience stores are within easy walking distance.
- Even with teenage sons, this area offers a mix of historic and lively modern elements, keeping them engaged without needing constant transportation.
Recommendation:
- For a first-time visit focused on immersion in Xi'an’s culture, streets, and walking experience, the Bell Tower / City Wall area is generally the better choice.
- Everbright City is suitable if you prioritize modern comfort and larger rooms but comes at the cost of feeling isolated from local culture and walkable streets.
- Considering your desire for a mix of quiet streets, busy streets, interesting architecture, and easy access to shops and food, Bell Tower area fits your criteria best.
Overall, staying near the Bell Tower allows you to enjoy daily explorations on foot, experience local life directly, and still have easy access to transportation if you want to venture further out to sites like the Terracotta Army or Big Wild Goose Pagoda.
