Meeks Bay in August - crowded?

We are considering booking an airbnb near Meeks Bay beach this summer, and I was wondering how crowded it can be at that time of year? I've only been to Lake Tahoe once, and it was in the winter for skiing, so I don't know what to expect in the summer. We are a family of 5, all adults. We love spending time on the water, swimming, paddleboard, kayaking, boating, etc. Any advice on what August is like, what we should consider doing while there, restaurants, etc. are all welcome! TIA!

Meeks Bay in August is a beautiful spot on the west shore of Lake Tahoe, but it can get quite busy during the peak summer months. Since August is high season, you should expect crowds, especially on weekends, though it tends to be slightly less hectic than South Lake Tahoe beaches.

Tips for enjoying Meeks Bay:

  • Arrive early in the morning to secure parking and a good spot on the beach, as parking is limited and fills quickly.
  • Consider weekdays if possible, as weekends can be particularly crowded with both locals and tourists.
  • The beach has calm, clear waters which are perfect for swimming, paddleboarding, kayaking, and small boating.
  • Pack your own beach gear, picnic supplies, and sunscreen, as amenities are somewhat limited.

Activities around Meeks Bay:

  • Rent paddleboards, kayaks, or small boats nearby for a day on the water.
  • Explore hiking trails in the area, such as the Meeks Bay Trail or nearby Desolation Wilderness for scenic views.
  • Visit nearby Emerald Bay State Park for spectacular views and photo opportunities.
  • Bike along the West Shore Trail for a mix of exercise and lake views.

Dining options near Meeks Bay are somewhat limited but enjoyable:

  • Meeks Bay Resort has casual dining and lakefront views.
  • Nearby Tahoe City offers more restaurants, cafes, and grocery stores for meals or supplies.
  • Pack your own lunches or plan for picnic-style meals at the beach for flexibility and convenience.

In summary, if your family enjoys water activities, August is a fantastic time for Meeks Bay, but plan for crowds, early arrivals, and consider bringing your own provisions. The stunning lake scenery and recreational options make it worth the visit despite the higher summer traffic.
