Best location/time to park for Devils Bridge?

We are heading to Devils Bridge Sunday morning with our 3 kids ages 15,12,8.

We are staying in West Sedona. We will be on East Coast time having just arrived on Saturday so plan to take advantage and wake up early. How early is early enough?

Is there a better place to park early in the morning? We have read about a few different parking options

Dry Creek Vista Trailhea?

Visiting Devil’s Bridge is one of the most popular hikes in Sedona, so planning your parking and start time is key, especially with kids. Since you’re coming from the East Coast and staying in West Sedona, an early start will help you beat crowds and the midday heat.

“Early enough” typically means arriving around 6:30–7:00 AM, especially on a Sunday. This gives you a good chance of securing a parking spot and enjoying a quieter hike. Keep in mind sunrise is a beautiful time but might be a little dark for younger kids until fully awake.

Regarding parking options:

  • Devil’s Bridge Trailhead (Dry Creek Vista / Forest Road 152): This is the traditional starting point for the hike. The small parking lot fills quickly, so arriving by 6:30 AM is ideal. There is limited overflow parking along the shoulder of FR 152, but be cautious of road conditions.
  • Mescal Trailhead: This adds a longer approach to the hike if you start here, but the parking lot is slightly larger and often has spots earlier in the morning. It’s a good alternative if the main trailhead is full.
  • Sedona Shuttle Stop (Upper Red Rock Loop Road): The shuttle stop area can sometimes be used for parking if you’re early and don’t mind a slightly longer walk to connect with the Devil’s Bridge Trail. Check shuttle schedules if you plan to ride part of the route back.

Tips for a family with kids:

  • Bring plenty of water and snacks; the hike is moderately strenuous, especially near the arch itself.
  • Wear sturdy shoes; the final ascent to the arch involves rocky scrambling.
  • Consider hiking poles for the kids if they’re not used to uneven terrain—it can help with stability.
  • Arriving early not only helps with parking but also lets you enjoy photos without large crowds at the arch.

In short, the best strategy is to target the main Dry Creek Vista Trailhead around 6:30–7:00 AM, and have Mescal Trailhead as a backup. This maximizes your chance for a smooth morning hike and safer experience for your kids.
