Hot Air Balloon Ride

Hi there- This question has been asked before but not that recently so I’m hoping people can provide some current information on the relative benefits (or drawbacks) of choosing either Red Rock Balloons or Northern Lights Balloons for a hot air balloon ride for a trip we are thinking of taking this fall. Do the companies fly in different areas? Does one tend to have better views? I have read the experiences are different by company and I was hoping someone could maybe explain how. Does one company take more people up in one balloon than the other or have better commentary? It’s such an investment that I just would like to make sure that we go with the company that makes the most sense for us. Both companies get great reviews so I’m sure there isn’t a “wrong” answer- just seeking some additional info from folks with experience or knowledge of these companies. Thank you so much for any insight!

When planning a hot air balloon ride in Sedona, both Red Rock Balloons and Northern Lights Balloons are excellent options, each offering a slightly different experience. Both companies have strong reputations, experienced pilots, and generally high-quality customer service, but there are differences that may influence your choice depending on what you’re looking for.

Red Rock Balloons tends to focus flights over the central and southern areas of Sedona, providing close-up views of iconic formations such as Cathedral Rock, Bell Rock, and the surrounding red cliffs. Their flights often emphasize the dramatic landscapes of the Oak Creek Canyon area. They typically operate with smaller baskets, which can mean fewer passengers per flight, often around 12-16 people, allowing for a more intimate experience and easier movement for photography.

Northern Lights Balloons generally cover a wider range of Sedona’s northern and western areas. Flights often include panoramic vistas of the Sedona wilderness, including formations like Snoopy Rock and the western stretches of the Red Rock State Park area. Their balloons can carry a slightly larger number of passengers per flight, sometimes up to 16-20, which can affect the feel of the flight in terms of space and interaction with the pilot. Northern Lights pilots are known for informative commentary and sharing stories about the region, enhancing the educational and scenic experience.

  • Red Rock Balloons: smaller groups, closer to central Sedona formations, intimate experience, great for photography.
  • Northern Lights Balloons: slightly larger groups, broader area coverage including northern and western Sedona, informative commentary, panoramic views.

Other considerations for your decision may include the style of service, ease of booking, and morning versus evening flight schedules. Both companies operate primarily during sunrise to take advantage of calm winds and stunning lighting conditions, which is ideal for photography and scenic enjoyment. Customer reviews suggest that both companies prioritize safety, comfort, and providing memorable experiences, so you are unlikely to be disappointed either way.

  • Flight timing: sunrise is standard for both, providing optimal views and lighting.
  • Safety and comfort: both companies maintain strong safety records and professional staff.
  • Customer experience: Red Rock Balloons offers more intimate flights, Northern Lights may provide more extensive commentary.

Ultimately, your choice may come down to the specific scenery you want to prioritize and whether you prefer a smaller, more personal flight or a slightly larger flight with broader panoramic views. Both companies are excellent, and either will offer an unforgettable hot air balloon experience over Sedona’s stunning red rock landscape.
