Early morning activity and breakfast

We’re coming from the UK at the end of May and expect to be up pretty early due to the time difference and travelling with 2 early rising children (6&8)

Is there anything to do first thing aside from wondering to see the sights? Nowhere seems to open until 10am, I think we’ll be 4 hours into our day by then! Any good playgrounds for the kids?

Also where is good for breakfast at 7.30/8am? Pancakes would be a bonus!

We’re staying near the spy museum.

Many thanks

Arriving in DC from the UK and waking up early with young children gives you a unique opportunity to enjoy the city before the usual tourist crowds arrive. Even if museums and many attractions don’t open until 10am, there are plenty of ways to occupy the morning.

For early morning activity with kids, consider outdoor options and playgrounds:

  • Constitution Gardens / National Mall – Just a short walk from the Spy Museum, these open green spaces are perfect for stretching legs and letting kids explore. They can see monuments and fountains while enjoying a calm start to the day.
  • National Gallery of Art Sculpture Garden – Open early and outside, so the children can run around and you can enjoy art installations. The ice rink is seasonal, so check if it’s open in May.
  • Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum (outside viewing) – While the indoor museum opens later, the outside exhibits and aircraft on display can be fun to walk around early in the morning.
  • Constitution Gardens Playground – A small, well-maintained playground near the Mall that’s suitable for ages 6-8.

For breakfast around 7:30–8:00am near the Spy Museum, several options cater to families and early risers, including places with pancakes:

  • Founding Farmers DC – Opens early and serves hearty breakfast options including pancakes, waffles, and farm-style eggs. Known for family-friendly atmosphere.
  • Blue Duck Tavern – More upscale, but opens early on weekends for breakfast and offers fresh pastries and egg dishes.
  • Lincoln’s Waffles & Pancakes – Casual spot popular with families for pancakes and kid-friendly options. Check exact hours as they may vary seasonally.
  • Capitol Hill Coffee / Eastern Market area cafés – Opens early and provides pastries, coffee, and quick breakfast options if you want something fast before heading out.

Tip: Early mornings are quieter on the National Mall and near the monuments, so it’s a perfect time for photos and letting the kids explore without crowds. Bring a light stroller or backpack carrier if needed for longer walks.
