DC Metro system

Our AirBnB is by the Ust NW Metro rail station. How safe is that area and the Metro rail and bus system in general? It will be myself and my two girls. Was thinking about doing a monument tour at night, but would it be safe if we were to take the bus or rail back? Thank you!

The U Street NW area of Washington DC is generally considered lively and culturally rich, with plenty of restaurants, music venues, and historic sites. Like any urban neighborhood, it is important to exercise standard city safety precautions, particularly at night.

Safety in U Street NW:

  • The area is relatively safe during the day, with active foot traffic and police presence, but late at night, some streets may be quieter, so it’s best to stay in well-lit areas.
  • Stick to main streets, avoid isolated alleyways, and remain aware of your surroundings, especially when walking with children.
  • Using rideshare services for late-night trips can provide an added layer of security compared to walking alone.

DC Metro Rail and Bus System:

  • The Metro rail system is generally safe and widely used by residents and tourists alike. Stations in busy areas like U Street have staff, cameras, and security presence.
  • During peak hours and early evenings, the system is busy, which adds to overall safety. Late-night travel may involve fewer passengers, so extra vigilance is recommended.
  • Metro buses are also safe but can be less predictable in terms of crowds and schedules, especially late at night.

Tips for Using Metro and Buses at Night:

  • Plan your route in advance using the WMATA trip planner or apps to minimize waiting times at stations or stops.
  • Stay near other passengers and avoid empty cars if traveling late.
  • Keep your belongings secure and close to you at all times.
  • If possible, travel with another adult or in a small group; this is safer and often more comfortable.
  • Consider using a rideshare service for the final leg from the nearest Metro station to your Airbnb if you arrive after dark or if your daughters are tired.

Overall, the combination of U Street NW’s lively environment and the relatively safe Metro system makes it feasible to do evening activities, such as a monuments tour, but taking precautions such as traveling in groups, staying alert, and potentially using rideshares for late-night segments is recommended to ensure safety for you and your children.
