Where to stay

Hi planning our first trip to Washington where is the best place to stay? We like to be central and close to everything. Thanks in advance for your help

For a first-time visit to Washington DC, choosing a hotel that is central and walkable to the main attractions will make your trip much easier and more enjoyable. Being close to the National Mall, museums, and Metro stations is especially convenient.

Here are some great areas and hotel options to consider:

  • Downtown / Penn Quarter / Chinatown: Very central, close to the National Mall, museums, theaters, and restaurants. Easy access to Metro for longer trips. Hotels include the JW Marriott Washington DC, Hilton Garden Inn Washington DC/US Capitol, and Grand Hyatt Washington.
  • Foggy Bottom / West End: Close to the Kennedy Center, George Washington University, and the western side of the National Mall. Hotels like the Conrad Washington DC or AKA Washington Circle are popular, modern, and comfortable.
  • Georgetown: Quaint, historic area with shops, restaurants, and waterfront views. No Metro directly, but buses and short rides can connect you to central DC. Hotels include the Four Seasons Hotel Washington DC and Georgetown Suites.
  • Capitol Hill / Eastern Side: Close to the Capitol, Library of Congress, Supreme Court, and Eastern National Mall. More residential, quieter, but still central. Options include the Capitol Hill Hotel and boutique guesthouses.

In general, staying in Downtown, Foggy Bottom, or near the National Mall will give you the most convenient access to the sights, restaurants, and nightlife. Georgetown is charming but less practical for walking everywhere, and Capitol Hill is quieter but slightly removed from evening activities.

Choosing a hotel near a Metro station is highly recommended if you plan to explore more of DC beyond the central area, as it will save time and give you flexibility.
