Activities in March

I am considering visiting Fairbanks in mid-March for aurora hunt. I plan 7, 8 days in total. I am looking for suggestion of other activities I can do during that period of time.

Thanks in advance,

Max

Visiting Fairbanks in mid-March is an excellent choice for aurora hunting. The nights are still long enough for good viewing, but the days are getting longer, offering more daylight for winter activities. With a week or slightly more, you can combine aurora-focused adventures with unique Alaskan experiences.

Here are some recommended activities:

  • Aurora Viewing Tours: Guided tours are highly recommended, as they take you away from city lights to maximize your chances of seeing the Northern Lights. Options include photography tours, heated vehicle tours, or even overnight aurora cabins.
  • Dog Sledding: Many operators near Fairbanks offer dog sledding adventures in March. You can try both short rides and full-day experiences with opportunities to learn about mushing and interact with the dogs.
  • Snowmobiling: Guided snowmobile tours are popular in the Fairbanks area. You can explore frozen rivers, trails, and even the Arctic landscape safely with experienced guides.
  • Ice Fishing: Try your hand at ice fishing on a local lake. Some tours provide all equipment and guidance, making it suitable even for beginners.
  • Chena Hot Springs: About an hour from Fairbanks, this resort offers natural hot springs to soak in after a cold day. They also offer aurora viewing opportunities and an ice museum to explore.

Other cultural and indoor options in Fairbanks:

  • Museum of the North at the University of Alaska Fairbanks: Learn about Alaskan history, wildlife, and indigenous cultures. A great indoor activity if the weather is very cold.
  • Pioneer Park: Open-air museum and historical village with museums, old trains, and a chance to explore local history.
  • Native Cultural Experiences: Some operators offer storytelling, craft demonstrations, or traditional meals with local Athabaskan communities.

Additional tips for your March visit:

  • Dress in layers and prepare for very cold temperatures, often below zero Fahrenheit in the evenings.
  • Plan aurora viewing for multiple nights to increase your chances, as conditions vary nightly.
  • Consider renting a car with winter tires if you plan to explore outside of guided tours, as roads can be icy.
  • Daylight in mid-March is about 11–12 hours, so schedule outdoor adventures during the day and aurora hunting at night.

With 7–8 days, you can comfortably mix aurora hunting with outdoor winter activities and cultural experiences, creating a well-rounded Alaskan adventure.
