Pre-cruise late afternoon activity?
We will land in Juneau at ~ 12:30 pm in mid July, will check into hotel and looking for what to do after that (cruise leaves following day).
To help you know we will have/will see. We will have spent a week prior near Seward - (salmon fishing one day, Kenai Fjords boat tour) and Brooks Falls. On our cruise we will be going to Glacier Bay, Tracy Arms, Wrangell, Haines and Petersburg. Excursions planned are Anan bears, Chilkat raft excursion, undecided in Oetersburg but maybe something with Leconte glacier.
Since we arrive in the afternoon - assume many activities started in morning for the cruise ships? Not sure if Mendenhall a priority given what else we will see? Dog sledding discovery? Just hang around Juneau?
Thoughts for an afternoon/evening?
Since you’ll be arriving in Juneau around 12:30 pm and checking into your hotel, you have a limited afternoon before your cruise the next day. Given your prior Alaska experience and the excursions already planned, you’ll want to pick something light, scenic, and relaxing rather than a full-day activity.
Options for a short afternoon/evening in Juneau:
- Downtown Juneau Walk: The downtown area is very walkable with shops, galleries, and cafes. You can stroll along Front Street, check out the local art, and enjoy waterfront views. This is a low-key option that won’t be tiring after your flight.
- Mount Roberts Tramway: A quick ride up Mount Roberts offers panoramic views of Juneau and Gastineau Channel. The tramway station is downtown, and the upper deck has easy walking paths. Perfect for a short scenic activity without requiring strenuous hiking.
- Juneau Whale Watching or Harbor Cruise: Many companies offer 2-3 hour afternoon cruises. If you’re interested in marine wildlife, you can get a taste of Alaska’s waters without committing to a full-day tour.
- Mendenhall Glacier (Quick Visit): Since you’ll be visiting glaciers on your cruise, this is optional. If you go, stick to the Visitor Center area or the easy Nugget Falls viewpoint trail—both are short and accessible. You can still enjoy a glacier experience without a long hike.
- Dog Sled Demonstration (Mendenhall or Downtown): If timing allows, some outfitters offer a dog sled experience on the Mendenhall Glacier year-round. It’s a unique Alaska activity that doesn’t require a lot of walking.
Tips for your afternoon:
- Consider the timing: most excursions start in the morning, so late afternoon is ideal for scenic, low-effort options.
- Keep transportation in mind: Juneau is compact, so driving or walking to downtown activities is easy. Mendenhall Glacier is about 12 miles from downtown, so plan ~30 minutes each way.
- Weather: pack layers and a light rain jacket—Alaska afternoons can be cool and breezy even in July.
- Dining: have an early dinner downtown to enjoy local seafood, or grab something casual if you want to keep the afternoon light.
Overall, for your first afternoon in Juneau, a combination of a downtown stroll, tramway ride, and perhaps a short visit to Mendenhall Glacier or dog sled demonstration would make for a relaxing and scenic pre-cruise experience without overdoing it after travel.
