Peak to Peak Hwy
Will we miss too much of the Peak to Peak Hwy if we cut over in Boulder and start near Nederland going north to Estes Park?
The Peak to Peak Highway is one of Colorado’s most scenic drives, running roughly 55 miles from Estes Park in the north to Black Hawk and Central City in the south. It passes through picturesque mountain towns, pine forests, and offers stunning views of the Continental Divide. Starting your drive near Nederland and heading north to Estes Park means you will still see a significant portion of the route, but you will miss the southern sections closer to Black Hawk and Central City.
Here’s what to consider if you cut over in Boulder:
- Starting near Nederland allows you to enjoy the northern portion of the Peak to Peak Highway, which includes small towns like Nederland, Allenspark, and Lyons, as well as beautiful vistas of the Rockies and access to hiking or short detours like Brainard Lake or the Arapaho National Forest.
- You will miss the southern stretch through Rollinsville, Ward, and Central City/Black Hawk, which features historic mining towns and casinos. This area is more about history and cultural stops than high mountain scenery.
- The northern section from Nederland to Estes Park is very scenic, arguably the highlight for nature lovers, with multiple pull-offs and overlooks perfect for photos, wildlife spotting, and easy hikes.
Additional tips:
- If your priority is mountain scenery, wildlife, and a relaxed drive with stops, starting near Nederland north to Estes Park gives you most of the best natural views.
- Allow extra time for short detours to viewpoints, waterfalls, or lakes along the northern portion.
- Check road conditions, as some portions of the Peak to Peak can be narrow or winding, and closures may occur due to weather.
In summary, while you will miss the southernmost part of the Peak to Peak Highway by starting near Nederland, you will still experience the most scenic and nature-focused part of the drive. For a first-time trip prioritizing mountains and easy stops, this route is a great choice.
