Hi All,
Me and my wife are planning for a trip to Alaska end of August and first Week of September. We are lightly active and can hike up to 4-5 miles of medium elevation and 2-3 miles for high elevation. We fly into Anchorage on August 30th night and fly out of Fairbanks September 7th (12:10 midnight) so we have about 7 days. Some of the things that we want to experience based on our research about Alaska that we are excited about
- Hiking on the glacier (we have never seen one :) ).
- Aurora viewing (again, never seen before ;) )
- Flight over Denali.
- Wildlife viewing (Bears, Moose, Whales etc...)
Currently we have just mapped out the rough areas where I would be staying / spending time in these 7 days, we would appreciate if you can comment on the plan and suggest specific activities to do.
Day 0 : Aug 30 : Arrive late evening and stay in Anchorage.
Day 1 : Aug 31 : Anchorage / Seward (Possibly visit Exit Glacier). We plan to do some part of Harding Icefield trail (either until marmot meadows or top of the cliffs).
Day 2 : Sep 01 : Seward / Kenai Fjords (Cruise or any other options to explore? Please suggest)
Day 3 : Sep 02 : Glacier view, visit Matanuska Glacier and drive to stay the night at Talkeetna (possible to fit in Flight tour on this day ?)
Day 4 : Sep 03 : Denali Flight tour (if not possible the previous day ) or (Need recommendations) drive to stay near Denali National Park
Day 5 : Sep 04 : Denali National Park (take the tundra wilderness tour) --> Drive to Fairbanks (to increase chance of Aurora viewing, if it's better to stay in Denali can do that as well).
Day 6 : Sep 05 : Fairbanks exploration or any possible day trips + Night 2 of Aurora viewing
Day 7 : Sep 06 : We have the whole day as our flight departs at midnight ( need suggestions)
Appreciate any feedback on the plan and please suggest any modifications that you find suitable. If there are any experiences that are better done with a guide please do let us know.
Your Alaska itinerary for the end of August into early September is ambitious but feasible, given your interest in hiking, wildlife, glaciers, and aurora viewing. Below is a detailed review and suggestions to optimize your 7-day trip.
Day 0: Aug 30 – Anchorage Arrival
Arriving late evening, it’s best to stay near the airport or downtown Anchorage. Rest and recover from your flight, as the next day involves significant driving and outdoor activity.
Day 1: Aug 31 – Anchorage to Seward / Exit Glacier
Driving from Anchorage to Seward takes approximately 2.5-3 hours. Exit Glacier is a great first taste of Alaskan glaciers. For the Harding Icefield Trail:
If time permits, explore Seward town or the harbor in the evening.
Day 2: Sep 01 – Kenai Fjords / Seward
Kenai Fjords National Park is famous for marine wildlife and tidewater glaciers. Cruise options include:
Afterward, return to Seward or begin driving north toward Talkeetna if you want to reduce travel the next day.
Day 3: Sep 02 – Matanuska Glacier / Talkeetna
Matanuska Glacier is accessible by car (approx. 2 hours from Anchorage). Guided glacier hikes are recommended for safety and insight:
After Matanuska, drive to Talkeetna (approx. 2.5 hours). If the Denali flight tour is not done this day, Talkeetna is a convenient base for scenic flights the following morning.
Day 4: Sep 03 – Denali Flight Tour / Drive to Denali Area
If you didn’t take the flight the previous day, book a morning scenic flight over Denali. Flights from Talkeetna are 1.5-2 hours and offer incredible aerial views of glaciers and peaks.
After the flight, drive to a lodge near Denali National Park (2-2.5 hours). Stay close to the park for wildlife and aurora viewing opportunities.
Day 5: Sep 04 – Denali National Park / Drive to Fairbanks
The Tundra Wilderness Tour is highly recommended for wildlife viewing (moose, bears, caribou) and stunning scenery. Tours last 6-8 hours. Consider:
Drive to Fairbanks (2-2.5 hours) in the evening if you want a city base for aurora viewing and amenities.
Day 6: Sep 05 – Fairbanks Exploration / Aurora
Activities around Fairbanks include:
Plan your night for aurora viewing; early September is ideal, but weather and solar activity influence visibility.
Day 7: Sep 06 – Fairbanks / Departure
Since your flight is at midnight, you have a full day. Suggestions:
Return rental car by evening and allow ample time for check-in for your late-night departure.
Additional Tips:
This plan balances your interest in glaciers, wildlife, and aurora viewing while keeping travel manageable. Staying near Denali one night is beneficial for aurora opportunities, but you can also base in Fairbanks if you prefer more amenities. Overall, it’s a rich and achievable itinerary for seven days in Alaska.
