Your planned Alaska itinerary is ambitious but doable, and with a few adjustments and clarifications, you can make the most of your 8-day trip. Here’s a detailed breakdown addressing your questions:

Day 1-2: Valdez

Arriving early in Anchorage and driving to Valdez will be long (~5-6 hours), but the Richardson Highway is scenic with waterfalls and mountains. For Day 2 in Valdez:

  • Glacier Lake Kayaking: Valdez has calm glacier-fed lakes like Shoup Bay or Columbia Glacier. If you’re comfortable in steady water kayaking, it can be a peaceful, immersive experience. Non-swimmers can do it safely with a life jacket and guided tour.
  • Glacier Cruise: Glacier cruises in Valdez are fantastic, but if you plan a Kenai Fjords cruise later, there will be some overlap in glacier scenery. However, Valdez cruises often include tidewater glaciers and marine wildlife unique to Prince William Sound, so it can still be worth it.
  • Alternative: If you want variety, consider a short hike like Mineral Creek Falls Trail or Keystone Canyon for waterfalls.

Day 3: Valdez → Northern Route to Denali

  • Driving to Fairbanks via Richardson Highway is scenic but long (~6–7 hours). The road is generally in good condition, with dramatic mountain passes, waterfalls, and historic sites. It’s a beautiful drive if you enjoy scenery and don’t mind a long day.
  • Northern lights are unlikely in late August; typically visible from late September to April.
  • Optionally, driving via Glenn Highway to stay in Willow shortens the drive and offers views of the Talkeetna Mountains and Matanuska Glacier. It’s less remote but easier logistically.

Recommendation: If you enjoy long scenic drives and wilderness, go to Fairbanks. If you want a shorter drive with a more relaxed evening, stay in Willow.

Day 4-5: Denali National Park

  • Shuttle bus tours are excellent for wildlife viewing and seeing the park’s interior. Catnwell or nearby lodges are convenient for overnight stay.
  • Talkeetna overnight after exploring Denali works well for breaking up the drive south and enjoying the quaint town, small galleries, and local eateries.

Day 6 & 8: Talkeetna → Seward → Anchorage

Options to combine sightseeing and short hikes:

  • Option 1: Hatcher Pass + Girdwood. Hatcher Pass offers alpine meadows, historical mining sites, and short hikes. Girdwood has scenic views, Alyeska Resort, and access to local restaurants.
  • Option 2: Girdwood + Whittier. Quick detour to Whittier is mostly for views and boat access; not much hiking.
  • Option 3: Hatcher Pass + Exit Glacier. This gives a mix of alpine scenery and a glacier hike; ideal for active exploration.

Recommendation: For Day 6, Hatcher Pass + Girdwood is ideal; for Day 8, Exit Glacier + Whittier on your way to Anchorage balances glacier experience with coastal scenery.

Day 7: Kenai Fjords Cruise

  • Reserve a day cruise from Seward; you’ll see tidewater glaciers, whales, sea lions, and puffins. This is unique from Valdez, even if you did a Valdez cruise.

Other recommended hikes, stops, and local food:

  • Valdez: Keystone Canyon, Bridal Veil Falls.
  • Denali NP: Horseshoe Lake Trail (short, easy, wildlife view).
  • Talkeetna: Talkeetna Riverfront Trail, Nagley’s Store for coffee and local treats.
  • Seward: Exit Glacier Trail (short hike to view glacier terminus).
  • Anchorage: Tony Knowles Coastal Trail for a scenic walk or bike; Snow City Cafe for breakfast.

Summary Recommendations:

  • Day 3: Choose based on comfort with long drives; Fairbanks for scenic wilderness, Willow for shorter drive.
  • Day 6-8: Combine Hatcher Pass + Girdwood and Exit Glacier + Whittier to see a mix of mountains, glaciers, and coastal scenery.
  • Valdez: Glacier cruise is worth it even if you do Kenai Fjords later; kayaking is optional if you want a quieter, hands-on experience.
  • Include short hikes at Denali, Hatcher Pass, Exit Glacier, and Valdez for easy wildlife and scenic exposure.

Overall, your itinerary is well-paced, but building in flexibility for weather or extra sightseeing will make the trip more enjoyable.
