Hello, I need some help, put on your thinking caps.
I am coming in from out of town to take my 85 y/o mother in law, and her 92 y/o boyfriend and a few of their close friends out for her birthday. Here is the hard part, she, while having a bit of dementia, is fun and loves fun vibrant, new hip places. I want to make her happy, but her partner (who we love and has been with her for 15 years) is a bit of a curmudgeon. If it is too loud or too small of potions, (tasting menus are out) or not meat and potatoes enough, he will be vocal and upset, then she will be sad.
They live in Lincolnwood. We can travel, prefer not to come into city, but could for the right experience. We did her last big celebration at Futon Market kitchen, which she loved. I would prefer to keep entrees in the $30-50 and would like there to be ambiance. We are going out on a Tuesday night as that is her birthday, so it should keep the crowds down. I was leaning toward Italian as everyone can find something but very open to other options.
I appreciate any help I can get.
Thanks,
It sounds like you’re trying to find a perfect balance between a fun, vibrant atmosphere and a comfortable, welcoming environment for your 85-year-old mother-in-law and her partner. You want a place where everyone can enjoy themselves, but where your mother-in-law’s partner won’t be overwhelmed by loud noise or too fancy of a menu. Given these preferences, I think there are a few excellent restaurants on the North Shore and in the surrounding suburbs that will fit the bill. Here are some great options for a memorable, low-stress birthday celebration:
1. Trattoria Delle Marche (Winnetka)
This Italian restaurant offers a cozy, upscale vibe without being too pretentious. The ambiance is warm and welcoming, with an emphasis on fresh, homemade Italian fare. The portions are generous, and the menu includes classic dishes like pasta, veal, and steak—perfect for your mother-in-law’s partner’s tastes. It's a comfortable spot for an older crowd, and the crowd is usually quieter on weekdays. It’s also a great place for a celebration without being too loud.
2. Ristorante Bottaio (Evanston)
Ristorante Bottaio offers delicious Italian food with great service and a comfortable atmosphere. It's not overly loud, and you can enjoy traditional, hearty dishes like lasagna, veal, and steak. It has a rustic charm with some modern touches, but it’s not a place that feels too trendy or overwhelming for older guests. Plus, they offer an extensive wine list and a well-rounded menu that will appeal to all tastes.
3. The Capital Grille (Skokie)
The Capital Grille is a classic American steakhouse with a fantastic reputation for its meat dishes, making it an ideal choice for someone who loves meat and potatoes. The restaurant offers a quiet, sophisticated setting with excellent service, and the ambiance is elegant but not noisy, especially on a Tuesday evening. It’s perfect for a special occasion, and the portions are generous, making it easy for everyone to find something they enjoy.
4. Chef’s Station (Wilmette)
Chef’s Station is a small, neighborhood gem offering American cuisine with a sophisticated twist. The vibe is cozy and intimate, and the restaurant’s focus is on fresh, high-quality ingredients. The menu includes a variety of meat and potato options, along with dishes like prime rib, duck, and roasted chicken. It’s a great place for a quieter evening, especially on a Tuesday, with attentive service and a lovely atmosphere.
5. Oak Terrace (Glenview)
If you’re looking for a classic, elegant dining experience with a focus on traditional American fare, Oak Terrace in Glenview is a great option. The menu offers a wide range of meat-based dishes, including steaks, chops, and hearty sides. The setting is upscale but not too loud, and it’s ideal for those who want to enjoy a nice meal in a peaceful environment without dealing with large crowds.
Conclusion: For a special celebration with the right balance of fun and comfort, I would recommend either Trattoria Delle Marche or Ristorante Bottaio for their warm ambiance, classic Italian dishes, and welcoming environment. If you're looking for more American-style hearty fare, The Capital Grille and Chef’s Station both offer great options with an elegant, quieter atmosphere. All of these venues should offer the right vibe for your mother-in-law’s birthday, providing a great atmosphere while keeping her partner content with solid, flavorful food. Enjoy the celebration!
