Activities to do along Richardson Highway vs Denali Highway

Hi. I am planning to drive from McCarthy towards Fairbanks (and then onto Dalton Highway) around July 1. We will probably take 2-3 days to do the drive. My question is if we should take the Denali Highway or Richardson Highway. Which highway will provide more things to do? Given Denali Highway is a remote gravel road, I am not sure how many hiking trails, activities will be easily accessible from the road. It is also possible that we do the Denali highway as fast as possible (not faster) and then enter Denali NP to spend a day there before reaching Fairbanks. Also, I am guessing weather conditions would decide if we will see good scenery from Denali Highway as well. Which highway is on average more scenic given weather conditions, etc?

Note: We do have a rental that is permitted to drive on all gravel roads in AK.

Thank you for your help.

Driving from McCarthy toward Fairbanks offers two very different experiences depending on whether you take the Richardson Highway or the Denali Highway. Both routes have their merits, but they cater to different types of travelers and interests. Here’s a detailed comparison to help you decide.

Richardson Highway (via Glennallen/Valdez route):

This is a paved highway and the main route from McCarthy to Fairbanks if you prefer an easier drive with more established amenities along the way. The Richardson Highway is scenic with mountain views, glaciers, and rivers, and provides several convenient stops for short hikes and sightseeing.

  • Worthwhile stops: Wrangell-St. Elias National Park viewpoints, Worthington Glacier, and small towns like Glennallen and Delta Junction.
  • Hiking options: Several short trails near roadside pullouts and visitor centers are accessible without needing to venture deep into wilderness.
  • Wildlife viewing: Easier access to moose, Dall sheep, and potentially bears near the park boundaries.
  • Amenities: Gas stations, restaurants, and accommodations are available along the route, making it easier to plan breaks and overnight stops.

Denali Highway (Alaska Route 8, gravel road):

The Denali Highway is a remote, gravel road that runs from Paxson to Cantwell and is generally considered one of the most scenic drives in Alaska. It is less developed, so the experience is more backcountry-oriented and ideal for travelers looking for solitude and wild landscapes.

  • Scenery: Stunning alpine vistas, vast tundra, glacial rivers, and mountain ranges. Weather can dramatically affect visibility, so sunny days make this route particularly spectacular.
  • Activities:
    • Hiking: Several informal trails and pullouts lead to lakes, viewpoints, and tundra walks. Examples include Glacier Lake and Tangle Lakes.
    • Wildlife: Caribou, moose, foxes, and numerous bird species; sightings are more likely due to the low traffic.
    • Photography: Excellent opportunities due to wide-open landscapes and fewer vehicles.
  • Considerations: Gravel surface requires careful driving, slower pace, and awareness of limited services (gas and food options are minimal). Cell service is generally nonexistent.
  • Timing: One full day can cover the highway at a moderate pace, but you can also camp or stay at lodges along the route to fully explore and take short hikes.

Comparison & Recommendations:

  • If your priority is convenience, established stops, short hikes, and guaranteed amenities: take the Richardson Highway.
  • If your priority is remote scenery, wildlife viewing, backcountry hiking, and solitude: take the Denali Highway, weather permitting.
  • Combining both is possible: take the Denali Highway at a moderate pace, spend a day in Denali National Park for hikes and wildlife viewing, then use the Richardson Highway to reach Fairbanks efficiently with easier access to services.
  • Weather impact: Denali Highway scenery can be spectacular on clear days, but fog, rain, or low clouds can obscure views. The Richardson Highway is less affected by weather in terms of accessibility.

Given your rental allows gravel roads, the Denali Highway offers a unique, scenic, and adventurous route, but you should plan carefully, check weather forecasts, and ensure your vehicle is stocked with fuel, water, and emergency supplies. The Richardson Highway is more predictable and allows for easier sightseeing with short hikes and stops along the way.
