Hi. I am planning to drive from McCarthy towards Fairbanks (and then onto Dalton Highway) around July 1. We will probably take 2-3 days to do the drive. My question is if we should take the Denali Highway or Richardson Highway. Which highway will provide more things to do? Given Denali Highway is a remote gravel road, I am not sure how many hiking trails, activities will be easily accessible from the road. It is also possible that we do the Denali highway as fast as possible (not faster) and then enter Denali NP to spend a day there before reaching Fairbanks. Also, I am guessing weather conditions would decide if we will see good scenery from Denali Highway as well. Which highway is on average more scenic given weather conditions, etc?
Note: We do have a rental that is permitted to drive on all gravel roads in AK.
Thank you for your help.
Driving from McCarthy toward Fairbanks offers two very different experiences depending on whether you take the Richardson Highway or the Denali Highway. Both routes have their merits, but they cater to different types of travelers and interests. Here’s a detailed comparison to help you decide.
Richardson Highway (via Glennallen/Valdez route):
This is a paved highway and the main route from McCarthy to Fairbanks if you prefer an easier drive with more established amenities along the way. The Richardson Highway is scenic with mountain views, glaciers, and rivers, and provides several convenient stops for short hikes and sightseeing.
Denali Highway (Alaska Route 8, gravel road):
The Denali Highway is a remote, gravel road that runs from Paxson to Cantwell and is generally considered one of the most scenic drives in Alaska. It is less developed, so the experience is more backcountry-oriented and ideal for travelers looking for solitude and wild landscapes.
Comparison & Recommendations:
Given your rental allows gravel roads, the Denali Highway offers a unique, scenic, and adventurous route, but you should plan carefully, check weather forecasts, and ensure your vehicle is stocked with fuel, water, and emergency supplies. The Richardson Highway is more predictable and allows for easier sightseeing with short hikes and stops along the way.
