Trip to DC before Christmas
Looking at a trip to DC in December possibly 12/19-12/22 with two teenagers. Can you tell me is this a busy time for the museums and monuments? I looked at the Phoenix Park Hotel and it looks very reasonable (218 per night). Any pros and cons for a visit that time of year? This would be our first visit. Thanks!
Visiting Washington DC in December, specifically around 12/19-12/22, offers a unique holiday atmosphere but also comes with some considerations for first-time visitors, especially with teenagers.
Weather and Timing:
December in DC is cold, often ranging from the mid-30s to mid-40s Fahrenheit (1–7°C), with occasional snow or rain. You’ll want to dress in layers, including a warm coat, hats, and gloves. The shorter daylight hours mean sightseeing is best planned for earlier in the day, with indoor attractions in the afternoon or evening.
Crowds and Museum Traffic:
- The period right before Christmas can be moderately busy, especially at iconic attractions such as the National Mall monuments and the popular Smithsonian museums.
- Weekdays tend to be less crowded than weekends, but given your dates, you’ll likely encounter some school trips and holiday visitors.
- Some museums and attractions may have slightly adjusted hours due to the holidays, so it’s wise to check schedules in advance.
Hotel Considerations – Phoenix Park Hotel:
- Pros: Central location near Dupont Circle and easy access to Metro for sightseeing. The hotel often has reasonable rates, as you noted ($218/night), and provides a cozy, boutique feel. Walking distance to several restaurants and shops.
- Cons: Rooms are relatively small and may not have suites, which could be a factor for comfort with two teenagers. Parking is limited and paid, if you are driving. Breakfast options on-site are limited, so plan to explore nearby cafés.
Seasonal Highlights:
- Holiday decorations along the National Mall, at Union Station, and in downtown areas add a festive touch.
- The National Christmas Tree near the White House is a popular attraction and worth a visit in the evening for lights.
- Ice skating at the National Gallery of Art Sculpture Garden rink can be a fun activity for teenagers.
Pros and Cons of a December Visit:
- Pros: Fewer summer crowds, festive decorations, museums still open, and potential for a cozy, seasonal experience. Hotel prices can be reasonable compared with peak tourist seasons.
- Cons: Cold weather, possible rain or snow, limited daylight, and some attractions may be busier with holiday visitors. Outdoor monuments are less pleasant in cold temperatures.
For a first visit, this timing is still very workable. Plan to prioritize indoor museums for longer visits, take advantage of festive activities, and schedule outdoor sightseeing around the warmer part of the day. Your choice of Phoenix Park Hotel offers convenience and reasonable rates, making it a practical base for exploring the city with teens.
