Rain gear in June

If I don't plan yo go on any small boats, do I need Rain pants?

Visiting Alaska in June generally brings milder temperatures compared to the winter months, but it is also one of the wetter months in many regions, especially in Southeast Alaska and coastal areas. Even if you are not planning to go on small boats, some form of rain protection is still recommended due to frequent showers and damp conditions.

Whether you need rain pants specifically depends on your planned activities:

  • If you are mostly walking around towns, visiting museums, or doing short hikes on well-maintained trails, a good waterproof jacket with a hood is usually sufficient. Lightweight, quick-drying pants are generally enough for your legs.
  • If you plan to do longer hikes, go into dense forests, or be out in windy or wet conditions for extended periods, waterproof rain pants can add comfort and keep you dry.
  • For casual sightseeing or short excursions, most visitors get by with just waterproof or water-resistant pants (like synthetic hiking pants) and layering, without dedicated rain pants.

Additional tips:

  • Waterproof hiking shoes or boots are more important than rain pants for comfort in wet conditions.
  • Bring a small packable rain jacket, regardless of your activity, as rain showers can come and go quickly.
  • If you will be in areas with tall grass, rivers, or muddy trails, rain pants are recommended to stay dry and avoid chilling.

In summary, rain pants are optional if you are sticking to town or short, easy hikes, but they become more valuable for longer hikes or wetter trails. A waterproof jacket is essential no matter what.
