Durango Silverton railway questions

I'm planning a trip for early September and would like to know the difference between diesel and steam engines other than price. Any other tips appreciated!

The Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad is a classic Colorado experience, and choosing between diesel and steam engines can impact your ride in several ways beyond just price.

Differences between diesel and steam engines:

  • Experience & Ambiance: Steam engines offer a more historic and immersive experience, with the sights, sounds, and smells of a classic steam train. The sound of the whistle, the puffs of smoke, and the hissing of steam create a unique atmosphere reminiscent of the late 1800s.
  • Ride Dynamics: Steam engines often pull a bit slower and may feel more “authentic” for sightseeing. Diesel engines can be smoother and slightly faster but may feel less nostalgic.
  • Photo Opportunities: Steam engines provide extra photo appeal due to the smoke and classic design, which many visitors enjoy capturing along the scenic route.
  • Seating & Carriage Options: Both steam and diesel use the same passenger cars, so comfort, indoor/outdoor seating, and accessibility are similar.

Additional tips for your trip:

  • Book early: September is a popular time with great fall scenery; tickets can sell out, especially for steam engine rides.
  • Timing: Morning rides tend to have clearer skies for photography; afternoon rides may offer warmer light for scenic shots.
  • Clothing: Even in September, mountain temperatures can be chilly, especially in the shade or along the river—layers are recommended.
  • Views: Sit on the left side of the train heading north to Silverton for some of the best views of the Animas River and surrounding mountains, though both sides offer beautiful scenery.
  • Dining/Refreshments: Some trains offer snack cars or trolley service. Consider bringing water and light snacks, especially if you prefer to explore the train cars during the ride.
  • Photography: Open-air cars offer unobstructed views, but be mindful of smoke from the steam engine blowing toward the cars.

Overall, if you want the full historic, atmospheric experience and don’t mind a slightly slower ride, the steam engine is highly recommended. Diesel engines are still scenic and reliable, a great option if you prefer a smoother, less smoky experience or have a tighter schedule.
