Backpacks Allowed At Beijing Attractions?

I use a backpack for carrying my camera lens, passport, etc.

Do they allow backpacks at places in Beijing like the Forbidden City? What about the Great Wall? I searched but didn't find a clear answer.

Thanks

In Beijing, many major tourist attractions do allow backpacks, but there are specific rules and security checks you need to be aware of. This is especially true for sites with high visitor numbers and strict security protocols.

At the Forbidden City:

  • Backpacks are allowed but must go through the security scanner at the entrance.
  • Large backpacks may sometimes be subject to size restrictions. Generally, backpacks that can be carried comfortably on your back are fine.
  • There are bag check facilities available if you have very large bags or want to leave unnecessary items behind.
  • Keep your backpack close, as the Forbidden City can get crowded, and pickpocketing, while rare, is easier in congested areas.

At the Great Wall (e.g., Badaling, Mutianyu, Jinshanling):

  • Backpacks are generally allowed, and there are usually no size restrictions, but large bags may attract extra scrutiny at entrance gates.
  • Security checks are present, so expect your backpack to be scanned.
  • If you plan on hiking sections of the wall, make sure your backpack is light and has secure straps, as there are steep stairs and uneven surfaces.
  • Water, snacks, and camera gear in a backpack are convenient, but avoid carrying excessive items since it can become tiring on long hikes.

Additional tips:

  • For both attractions, consider a smaller daypack if you plan to walk extensively.
  • Always have your passport and ticket handy, as some entrances may ask to see identification along with your ticket.
  • Weather can vary, so having a light raincoat or jacket in your backpack is helpful, especially at the Great Wall in summer or winter.

In summary, backpacks are allowed at most Beijing attractions including the Forbidden City and the Great Wall, but they will go through security checks and should be reasonably sized for comfort and safety.
