Fisherman’s Wharf is one of San Francisco’s busiest tourist areas, but there are some great restaurants nearby that feel more authentic and less crowded. Since you’re looking for a mix—ribs/steaks for you and seafood for your partner—there are a few spots that balance both preferences while giving you a comfortable first-night experience.

Restaurants near Fisherman’s Wharf worth considering:

  • Susan’s Rib House – Classic ribs and BBQ offerings, casual environment, and friendly service. While it’s not a fine-dining spot, the ribs are highly recommended and portions are generous. They occasionally offer seafood sides as well.
  • Gary Danko – Upscale option, perfect if you want a first-night splurge. They serve excellent steaks and seafood with a fine-dining twist. Not overly touristy if you make a reservation, and the service and ambiance are superb. Located a short drive or ride away from the Wharf.
  • Fog Harbor Fish House – Located right on Pier 39, but slightly off the main tourist crush. Offers sustainable seafood and some surf-and-turf options. Great for your partner’s seafood preference, and some steak dishes are also available.
  • Epic Steak – On the Embarcadero, offering excellent steak with views of the Bay. They also have seafood options and a nice modern setting. Good compromise if you want a slightly less tourist-heavy waterfront location.

Tips for your first night:

  • Consider making reservations, especially at Gary Danko or Epic Steak, to avoid long waits.
  • If you want a casual introduction to San Francisco without dealing with crowds, try walking a few blocks inland from the Wharf to North Beach or the Embarcadero for quieter dining streets.
  • Arriving just before sunset gives you the bonus of seeing the Bay views while dining, which enhances the experience without being trapped in a crowded tourist spot.

Overall, for a mix of steak/ribs and seafood while staying close to Fisherman’s Wharf, Epic Steak or Gary Danko are probably your best bets for a more refined evening, while Susan’s Rib House or Fog Harbor Fish House are great casual alternatives that satisfy both preferences.
