Golden Gate Bridge

We are visiting Napa Valley, flying into SFO. Our September Monday flight arrives around 11 AM and we are grabbing a rental car at the airport.

Our plan is to drive across the Golden Gate Bridge and stop on the North side to take pictures. Is there a place to park? I have heard that it is not safe to leave luggage in the car. I think everything will be in the trunk, but not sure. I also have read about Battery Spencer. Would that be a better place to go to see it the best (realizing that we will have luggage in the car)??

Does anyone have a physical address of the parking place north of Golden Gate?

Thank you for your help for this east coast native!!

Visiting the Golden Gate Bridge from San Francisco on your way to Napa Valley is a great idea, and there are several options for viewpoints and parking north of the bridge. Since you’ll have luggage in your car, it’s wise to be cautious and not leave valuables visible, even in the trunk.

Options for stopping north of the Golden Gate Bridge:

  • Golden Gate Bridge Welcome Center (north side): This is the main parking and visitor area with restrooms, informational displays, and a viewpoint. You can park here and safely take photos of the bridge. The physical address is:
    Golden Gate Bridge Welcome Center
Address: Golden Gate Bridge Toll Plaza, San Francisco, CA 94129
  • Battery Spencer: Located slightly further north, this is one of the most popular vantage points for photography, offering dramatic views of the bridge with San Francisco in the background. There is a small parking lot, but it can fill quickly, especially mid-day. Parking here is on a first-come, first-served basis, and the area can be busy on weekends or holidays. Address:
    Battery Spencer
Address: Conzelman Rd, Sausalito, CA 94965
  • Hawk Hill: Another viewpoint slightly further north of Battery Spencer. It has fewer crowds and a large parking area, offering sweeping views of the Golden Gate Bridge and the bay. Address:
    Hawk Hill
Address: Conzelman Rd, Sausalito, CA 94965

Safety tips for your visit:

  • Keep all luggage out of sight. Even in the trunk, it is better if valuables are not visible.
  • Do not leave personal items like bags, electronics, or passports in the car.
  • If possible, visit early in the day to secure parking and avoid crowds, especially at Battery Spencer and Hawk Hill.
  • Use the main Welcome Center if you want easy access to facilities, signage, and safer parking areas.

For a first-time visitor with luggage, the Golden Gate Bridge Welcome Center is likely the safest and most convenient option. If you want more dramatic photos with the city skyline in the background, Battery Spencer is ideal, but arrive early for parking and be mindful of leaving anything valuable in the car.
