San Diego House of Blues area

Hi

Hoping to see a show here in October. Is the area around there safe and is there a hotel close by (short walking distance) that you would recommend?

Is this a good area to stay to take in other activities like the SD Zoo?

Thanks in advance

The House of Blues in San Diego is located in the Gaslamp Quarter, a vibrant historic district in downtown San Diego. This area is popular with tourists and generally busy, especially during evenings and weekends, which makes it relatively safe. However, like any downtown nightlife area, it is best to stay aware of your surroundings and stick to well-lit streets, especially at night.

For hotels within walking distance, there are several good options that provide easy access to the House of Blues:

  • Omni San Diego – upscale hotel directly connected to the convention center, about a 5-minute walk to House of Blues.
  • Gaslamp Plaza Suites – comfortable, moderately priced, and within a few blocks of the venue.
  • Andaz San Diego – stylish, centrally located, about a 10-minute walk.
  • Courtyard by Marriott San Diego Downtown – practical, clean, and also within walking distance.

Regarding other activities like the San Diego Zoo, the Gaslamp Quarter is not particularly close (the Zoo is in Balboa Park, roughly 4-5 miles away). You would likely need to drive, take a rideshare, or use public transit to get there. Staying downtown is convenient for nightlife, restaurants, and harbor activities, but if your main priority is daytime attractions like the Zoo, you might consider staying closer to Balboa Park or the Hillcrest/Mission Hills area.

Other tips for the Gaslamp area:

  • Parking can be expensive and limited; many hotels offer valet or nearby paid parking.
  • The area is lively at night, so you’ll find lots of restaurants and bars within walking distance.
  • For sightseeing, downtown is convenient for USS Midway, Seaport Village, and harbor cruises.

In summary, the Gaslamp Quarter is safe for tourists if you take usual precautions and is ideal for nightlife and concert attendance. For daytime attractions like the Zoo, plan on a short drive or rideshare. Hotel options within walking distance to House of Blues are plentiful and range from luxury to moderate.
