Birthing Cave Hike

Hi, coming to Sedona at the start of August. I know it will be VERY hot! Trying to work out if on a Sunday we have to get the shuttle to do the Birthing Cave Hike or we can drive to the Long Canyon Trailhead? It looks on the shuttle info page that the shuttle doesn't go to the Long Canyon Trailhead but I can't tell if it is possible to drive there or if the roads are shut? Any info would be great :)

Visiting Sedona in early August means it will be very hot, so planning your hike carefully is essential. Regarding the Birthing Cave Hike, the trail is accessed via the Long Canyon Trailhead. This area is within the Red Rock District, and parking and access rules are important to know.

The Sedona Shuttle system primarily serves popular trailheads and parking areas to reduce congestion and protect the environment. The Long Canyon Trailhead is not currently served by the shuttle, so you will need to reach it by car.

Here’s what you need to know about driving there:

  • The roads to Long Canyon Trailhead are open to private vehicles on Sundays, unlike some of the more restricted areas where shuttles are mandatory during peak season.
  • Parking at Long Canyon Trailhead is limited, so plan to arrive early in the morning to secure a spot, especially on weekends.
  • During very hot months like August, it is highly recommended to start your hike early (before 8 am) to avoid the midday heat and bring plenty of water, sun protection, and light clothing.

Additional tips for the Birthing Cave Hike:

  • The hike is considered moderate and involves some rock scrambling, so proper footwear is important.
  • Since the trail is not served by shuttle, ensure your vehicle is in good condition and check for any temporary closures or maintenance updates on the Forest Service or Red Rock District website before heading out.
  • If parking is full at Long Canyon, consider nearby alternative trailheads that offer shuttle access or similar scenic views, though they may require longer hikes to reach the Birthing Cave area.

In summary, on a Sunday in early August, you can drive directly to the Long Canyon Trailhead to access the Birthing Cave Hike. The shuttle is not required, but early arrival and heat precautions are strongly recommended.
