Roadtrip from Sarasota to Panhandle (mid July)
I am looking for suggestions for 4-day road trip from Sarasota to the Panhandle for a special birthday celebration in mid-July. We don't know the area that well, other than seeing beautiful beaches on HGTV! We are active and like beaches, kayaking, hiking, visiting new towns, foodies. I would like to see Rosemary Beach and Destin. Other than that, I am totally open to suggestions:
- Which towns to visit
- Restaurant suggestions
- Must See and Must Do
Thank you for your help. I know this is very vague. Anything will be helpful!
A 4-day road trip from Sarasota to the Florida Panhandle in mid-July can be a fantastic mix of beaches, outdoor activities, charming towns, and great food. Since you’re looking to include Rosemary Beach and Destin, I’ll outline a route and highlights that fit an active, foodie-focused trip.
Suggested Route and Towns to Visit:
- Sarasota to Crystal River / Homosassa: If you like kayaking and wildlife, this is a great first stop. Paddle in the clear springs and see manatees (more common in winter, but kayaking is still beautiful).
- Panama City / Panama City Beach: A good mid-way stop along the Panhandle with beaches and local restaurants. If time allows, you could try kayaking or paddleboarding in St. Andrews Bay or Shell Island.
- Seaside and Rosemary Beach: These picturesque towns along 30A are must-see. Perfect for strolling the town centers, shopping, and beach time. Rosemary Beach has beautiful architecture and a relaxed, upscale vibe.
- Destin: Known for its sugar-white sand beaches and emerald waters. Destin Harbor is lively, great for sunset cruises, fishing trips, and waterside dining.
Must See & Must Do:
- Kayak through coastal dune lakes along 30A or in Grayton Beach State Park.
- Hiking or nature walks in Eden Gardens State Park or Point Washington State Forest near Rosemary Beach.
- Visit the Destin Harbor Boardwalk for shopping, sunset views, and entertainment.
- Beach hopping along 30A—each town (Seaside, WaterColor, Grayton, Rosemary) has its own charm.
- Optional: Day trip to Topsail Hill Preserve State Park near Santa Rosa Beach for secluded beaches and nature trails.
Restaurant Suggestions:
- Rosemary Beach / 30A area: Cowgirl Kitchen (casual breakfast/brunch), The Red Bar (eclectic, popular dinner spot).
- Destin: Harbor Docks (fresh seafood), Boshamps Seafood & Oyster House (harbor view dining), The Back Porch (classic beachside seafood).
- Panama City Beach: Schooners (classic beachfront dining), Firefly (upscale casual).
- On the way / roadside options: Look for local BBQ or Cuban sandwiches in small towns like Apalachicola or Pensacola area if you have time.
Tips:
- Book accommodations early, especially along 30A, as mid-July is peak season.
- Traffic along 30A can be slow in the afternoon; mornings are best for driving between towns.
- Bring beach gear and kayaks/paddleboards if possible, or rent locally.
- Plan for a mix of beach, water activity, and town exploration each day to balance relaxation and adventure.
Overall, this route allows for both active adventure and indulgent beach time, with plenty of opportunities for foodie stops and exploring charming Panhandle towns. It’s a great combination for a birthday celebration and a varied 4-day trip.
