Fairbanks to Denali

Good morning!

Arriving around Midnight on Friday the 4th. My plan was to get my rental car early Saturday morning and head to Denali. Just read the fires are causing part of the road to be closed. Google maps shows an alternate route, but drive time goes from 2 to 7 hours on the new route.

Any suggestions? First time visiting Alaska and this has thrown a wrench in my plans.

I do need to make my way South as I will be staying Saturday night in Anchorage.

Thank you for any input.

Driving from Fairbanks to Denali National Park is usually a straightforward 2-hour trip via the Parks Highway (Alaska Route 3). However, with part of the road closed due to wildfires, your options have changed significantly. A detour adding several hours can make the trip tiring and may affect your plans for staying in Anchorage that night.

Here are some considerations and suggestions to help you manage this situation:

  • Check official road closures: The Alaska Department of Transportation & Public Facilities (DOT&PF) provides up-to-date information on road closures, detours, and estimated delays. Before departing, verify the latest status for the Parks Highway and any alternate routes.
  • Consider a shorter itinerary: Instead of driving all the way to Denali, you could spend the morning exploring areas closer to Fairbanks, such as:
  • Chena Hot Springs – about 1.5 hours from Fairbanks, offering natural hot springs and scenic walks.
  • Pioneer Park or the University of Alaska Museum of the North – easy city-based attractions.
  • A short scenic drive along the Chena River or Tanana Valley.

If you still want to reach Denali, be aware that the alternate route may add 5+ hours. In that case, you could:

  • Start extremely early Saturday morning and accept a long day of driving.
  • Plan a brief stop in Denali or just enjoy the park’s entrance area without attempting long hikes or tours.
  • Consider staying closer to Denali for the night instead of returning to Anchorage, which may reduce total driving time and stress.

Another option is to adjust your plans southbound. Instead of returning to Anchorage via Denali, you could drive from Fairbanks to Anchorage directly, perhaps stopping at scenic points like Talkeetna, which is charming and offers shorter detours with minimal extra time.

Finally, make sure your rental car arrangements are flexible in case you need to adjust your schedule due to road conditions. Fire-affected roads in Alaska can change quickly, so having a backup plan is wise.
