Which Mission to visit?

My family is visiting next week (me, husband, 18-year-old son) and staying in the Mission Beach area. I think I have most of it figured out but have not decided which Mission we want to visit when we're there.

I know the two closest to us are San Diego de Alcala and San Luis Rey. We don't really want to drive up to Capistrano.

I am leaning toward San Luis Rey because I write a blog about cemeteries and I saw that they have one. I see it's in Oceanside. Is there anything else in that area we should see (besides the beach) or a restaurant worth trying?

Any help is appreciated! :-)

For a family staying in the Mission Beach area, both Mission San Diego de Alcalá and Mission San Luis Rey are worthwhile, but your interest in cemeteries and historic architecture makes San Luis Rey an excellent choice. It’s located in Oceanside, about a 40–45 minute drive north of Mission Beach, and is the largest of the California missions. The mission grounds are expansive, with beautiful gardens, a historic church, and the cemetery, which can be of particular interest for your blog.

Mission San Luis Rey Highlights:

  • The historic church: dating back to the late 18th century, with intricate interior artwork and architecture.
  • The cemetery: peaceful and historic, with notable burials that reflect the area’s history.
  • Museum and grounds: small museum with artifacts and exhibits about the mission’s history and the local Native American community.
  • Gardens and walkways: offer quiet spots for reflection, photography, and enjoying the architecture.

Other Attractions in Oceanside Nearby:

  • Oceanside Pier: iconic and scenic, perfect for a stroll or casual photography.
  • California Surf Museum: small but interesting if anyone in your family is into surf culture.
  • Heritage Park: historic homes and gardens within walking distance from downtown Oceanside.

Restaurant Recommendations in Oceanside:

  • Harney Sushi: Excellent sushi spot for fresh seafood.
  • Beach Break Café: Popular breakfast and brunch spot, especially if you want something casual near the beach.
  • Privateer Coal Fire Pizza: Great option for lunch or dinner with a relaxed atmosphere and outdoor seating.

If you have time, combining a morning visit to the mission with a stroll on Oceanside Pier and lunch nearby makes for a pleasant half-day outing without feeling rushed. Mission San Diego de Alcalá is closer to Mission Beach, but San Luis Rey offers more in terms of historic ambiance, grounds, and your specific interest in cemeteries.
