Trip plan - lodging/adventure
I know there are lots of lodging questions here but I have one too.
My husband and I are coming end of March. We want to go to Balboa park, kayak in La Jolla, visit Coronado. And other interesting hiking trail and definitely a sailing excursion. Any help with suggestions of area we should stay in that lends itself to these activities, we can rent a car but would also Lyft/Uber. At night we love to be able to walk to restaurants.
Lots of info requested appreciate all insights
For your late March trip to San Diego, it sounds like you’re aiming for a mix of cultural, water-based, and outdoor activities with convenient access to dining. Choosing a neighborhood that balances walkability, access to attractions, and a lively evening scene is key.
Based on your interests—Balboa Park, La Jolla kayaking, Coronado, hiking, and sailing—here are some ideal areas to stay:
- Downtown San Diego / Gaslamp Quarter: This area is very walkable with numerous restaurants, bars, and shops. Balboa Park is only a short drive away, and you’ll have easy access to sailing excursions in San Diego Bay. Lyft or Uber can easily get you to La Jolla and Coronado. It’s lively at night, so it’s perfect if you enjoy evening walks and dining out.
- La Jolla Village: If kayaking in La Jolla is a top priority, staying here puts you close to the water. The village has a charming selection of restaurants and boutique shops within walking distance. You’ll be about a 20-25 minute drive to Balboa Park. Excellent for a more relaxed, upscale vibe.
- Coronado Island: Ideal if sailing and beach time are priorities. It’s a beautiful area with a small-town feel, restaurants within walking distance, and direct access to the bay. However, it’s a bit farther from Balboa Park and La Jolla, so you’ll rely more on driving or rideshares for inland activities.
Other recommendations for activities and logistics:
- Kayaking in La Jolla: Book in advance, as tours can fill up. Look for sea cave and ecological tours, which are very scenic.
- Sailing excursions: San Diego Bay offers many options from 2-hour sails to sunset cruises. Staying near Downtown or Coronado gives you convenient access.
- Hiking: Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve near La Jolla offers stunning coastal hikes and is a short drive from most central locations. Cowles Mountain is another good hike if you want city views.
- Balboa Park: Allocate at least half a day for museums, gardens, and walking trails. Staying downtown allows you to get there quickly by car or rideshare.
Summary advice:
- If you want a vibrant evening scene and central access: Downtown / Gaslamp Quarter.
- If your priority is coastal scenery, kayaking, and beach walks: La Jolla Village.
- If your priority is sailing and a more relaxed island experience: Coronado.
Since you’ll have a rental car, any of these options work well for day trips. If walking to restaurants at night is important, Downtown or La Jolla are likely the best balance of accessibility, activity, and convenience.
