Hatcher's Pass

I'm back again!! We get off our ship in Whittier and we will head to Anchorage to get rental car. Our plan is to go to Denali and spend one night with a Jeep tour scheduled. After the jeep tour we will head to Talkeetna for the night and no tour booked there. Next day we go to Palmer for the helicopter glacier dog sledding tour. My question is since we don't have much planned in the Denali/Talkeetna area should we change and stay in the Hatcher Pass/Palmer area? I have read how beautiful Matansuka Glacier is and the surrounding area. We can do an atv tour of Hatcher Pass and that looks fun also. That covers 3 days then we go to Anchorage, spend the night and catch train to Seward for 2 nights. I also feel like we are missing a beautiful area by not stopping in Girdwood. The only part of the trip we can't change is train ride to Seward and staying 2 nights there. I might also add we are 6 senior citizen's between the age of 62-75 and won't be doing much hiking.

For a group of senior travelers looking for scenic views and accessible activities, focusing on the Hatcher Pass/Palmer area instead of spending more time in Denali/Talkeetna could be a great choice. Hatcher Pass offers stunning alpine scenery, historic mining sites, and the impressive Matanuska Glacier, which can all be enjoyed without strenuous hiking. The ATV tours in Hatcher Pass are a fun and safe way to explore the area, and the drives themselves are very scenic.

Here’s a breakdown to consider:

  • Day 1: Arrive in Anchorage from Whittier, pick up rental car, and drive to the Hatcher Pass/Palmer area. Settle into lodging and enjoy a leisurely afternoon viewing the mountains or a short local drive.
  • Day 2: ATV tour in Hatcher Pass, visit Matanuska Glacier viewpoints, take photos, enjoy the alpine scenery. This day is active but low-impact, perfect for your group’s comfort level.
  • Day 3: Optionally explore more of the Palmer area, small local museums, or even a light scenic drive toward Wasilla. Then return to Anchorage for overnight before your train ride to Seward.

If you stay in Denali/Talkeetna instead:

  • You’ll have the Jeep tour in Denali (already booked), but Talkeetna without a scheduled tour may feel slower for the group, and scenic drives require more time on the road.
  • Denali National Park is stunning, but most of the iconic views require either a long park bus tour or hikes, which may not suit a group of seniors wanting low-impact activity.

Regarding Girdwood:

  • Girdwood is a beautiful mountain resort area with Alyeska ski resort and stunning valley views. A short stop can be enjoyable, but it would require extra driving from your Hatcher Pass/Palmer plan. If the train ride to Seward is fixed, consider a quick scenic drive through Girdwood on your way to Anchorage, if timing allows.

Overall recommendation:

  • For scenic enjoyment without strenuous activity, Hatcher Pass/Palmer offers more flexible and senior-friendly options.
  • Include the ATV tour, glacier viewpoints, and relaxed drives to maximize comfort and sightseeing.
  • If you want a taste of Girdwood, plan a brief stop on the drive back to Anchorage, but don’t sacrifice too much time for the main highlights.

This plan keeps your days active but gentle, emphasizes beautiful landscapes, and avoids long hikes or time-consuming logistics while still allowing a memorable Alaska experience before your Seward train ride.
