Feedback Itinerary

Hi everyone!

I’m heading to Los Angeles from San Diego in early August and going with the no car option. I’ll be staying at the Hilton Garden Inn in Montebello (I know, but it was the most budget-friendly choice). I’m traveling with my brother (34), my mom (65, very adventurous and loves walking), and my son (6).

Here’s our itinerary as you you will see we are very into sports:

Sunday – Padres game and train to LA

Monday – Universal Studios

Tuesday – Tigres vs LAFC

Wednesday – Dodgers game and train back to SD

Thursday – Early flight out

I’d love to hear your general tips and recommendations, especially for:

Any must-knows for navigating LA without a car?

Apps to download in advanced.

For the train is the bussines class worth it?

Getting around – Should I rely on public transportation or use Uber/Lyft for certain days?

Food spots – Any good places to eat near Montebello, Universal Studios, or the stadiums?

Thanks in advance!

Your itinerary for Los Angeles looks exciting, especially with the mix of sports and theme parks. Traveling without a car in LA can be a bit challenging, but with planning and a combination of public transit and rideshare apps, it’s manageable.

Navigation without a car:

  • Montebello is not centrally located to the main attractions, so expect some rideshare use. Public transport (Metro) is available but will often require multiple transfers and longer travel times.
  • For game days and Universal Studios, Uber or Lyft may be more efficient, especially with your mom and young son in tow. You can also check for shared ride options to reduce costs.
  • LA Metro Rail covers some major areas, but many destinations like Montebello to Universal Studios are not directly connected, so rideshare will save time.

Apps to download in advance:

  • Uber or Lyft – essential for getting to stadiums, Universal Studios, and other locations not directly on public transit.
  • Google Maps – for transit directions and real-time traffic updates.
  • Metro Trip Planner – helps with bus and train schedules if you plan to use public transportation for certain legs.
  • SeatGeek or StubHub – useful if you want to track or buy tickets last minute for games.

Train travel considerations:

  • If you’re taking the Amtrak Pacific Surfliner from San Diego to LA, business class offers wider, more comfortable seats, priority boarding, and sometimes complimentary snacks and drinks. For a one-off round trip, it can be worth it for comfort, especially with your mom and son.
  • Business class can also reduce stress during busy times, as you’ll avoid long waits and have better seating.

Getting around:

  • For long distances or when you’re on a tight schedule, rely on Uber/Lyft. They are convenient and avoid multiple public transit transfers.
  • For shorter trips in more central areas (like Hollywood or Downtown LA), Metro buses or rail can be cost-effective.
  • Plan your days to minimize backtracking to Montebello; consider rideshare pools or multiple destinations in one area per day.

Food options:

  • Near Montebello: Many Mexican restaurants and casual American spots along Whittier Blvd. Notable spots include El Portal for Mexican food or Panda Inn for family-friendly Chinese cuisine.
  • Near Universal Studios: CityWalk has many options; outside the park, Universal City and Studio City have cafes, In-N-Out Burger, and casual sit-down restaurants.
  • Near the stadiums: Dodger Stadium has many concession options, but for pre-game meals, nearby areas like Elysian Park or Downtown LA offer casual dining. Banc of California Stadium (LAFC) is surrounded by Arts District spots and casual eateries like Wurstküche for gourmet sausages or nearby breweries.

Additional tips:

  • Always check event schedules and traffic predictions; LA traffic can be heavy, especially around stadium events.
  • Allow extra time for rideshare pickups and drop-offs at stadiums, especially during evening games.
  • For Universal Studios, arriving early helps avoid long lines. Consider buying tickets in advance for express entry if your budget allows.
  • Stay hydrated and plan rest stops, especially with your 6-year-old and 65-year-old mom. Walking shoes are recommended for all days.

Overall, your itinerary is feasible without a car, but relying on Uber/Lyft for major attractions will save time and reduce stress. Combining rideshare with selective use of public transit for shorter trips can balance convenience and budget.
