Road to Hana via Makawao

Three weeks from now I'll be back on Maui and later that week I will be doing an overnight in Hana. I'm not big on banana bread so I was thinking of stoping on my way from Wailea at Komoda Bakery in Makawao at about 7:30am along the way. I was wondering about the Kaupakalua Rd, from Makawao back to the Hana Highway doesn't look too windy on Google maps. Anything I should be aware of? I have driven the road to Hana several times and I don't plan to stop much along the way. Mahalo

The route from Wailea to Hana via Makawao is a scenic and less conventional option compared to the standard Hana Highway approach. Stopping at Komoda Bakery in Makawao around 7:30am is a great idea to get fresh pastries and avoid the main rush along the Hana Highway.

Regarding Kaupakalua Road (also known as Kaupakalua Road / Upper Kula Road segment):

  • It is generally less winding than the Hana Highway itself, but there are still some narrow, single-lane sections, particularly near bridges and over small creeks.
  • The pavement is mostly good, but some spots may have potholes or uneven surfaces. Drive cautiously and be prepared to yield in tight sections.
  • Traffic is typically light, especially early in the morning, so you shouldn’t experience much congestion.
  • Cell phone service is limited along parts of the road, so plan accordingly for navigation or emergencies.
  • There are fewer scenic stops on Kaupakalua Rd compared to Hana Highway, so if you are not planning to stop much, this route is efficient.

Additional tips for your Hana trip via this route:

  • Fuel up in Paia, Makawao, or nearby towns, as gas stations are sparse past Makawao.
  • Check the weather forecast—rain can make some sections slick and streams may rise quickly.
  • Bring snacks, water, and any essentials in case you do not stop along the way until Hana.
  • If you have an overnight booked in Hana, leaving early from Wailea gives you plenty of daylight for safe driving and to enjoy Hana without rushing.

Overall, taking the Kaupakalua Rd segment can be a smoother and faster alternative to the most winding parts of the Hana Highway, especially if your plan is to stop minimally. Just exercise usual caution on narrow or one-lane sections, and you should have a comfortable drive.
