Siguniang and Hailougou
I might visit these places either at the end of September or in mid-October. Would like to do some (limited, half day or so) trekking if possible. Here are some questions:
1. Weatherwise, what is better - end of September or mid-October?
2. How crowded do these places get in the golden week?
3. How to get to these places?
- ctrip.com have some tours, but I wonder if they let you trek for half a day or so, or if the schedule is tight and you have to follow the group.
- Alternatively, is it an option to get there with public transportation?
4. How are the trails, i.e. well maintained so that you can't get lost? What trails exist?
Visiting Siguniang and Hailougou in late September or mid-October can be a wonderful experience, especially for half-day trekking, but there are several factors to consider regarding weather, crowds, transport, and trail options.
1. Weather considerations:
- End of September usually has milder temperatures with early signs of autumn foliage. The weather is generally stable, though occasional rain is possible.
- Mid-October coincides with the peak of autumn colors, which makes for stunning scenery. However, temperatures can be cooler, especially at higher altitudes, and mornings/evenings may be chilly.
- Golden week in China (first week of October) can bring large crowds and higher prices, so traveling immediately after golden week may be preferable for fewer people and better experience.
2. Crowds during golden week:
- Siguniang Scenic Area and Hailougou are popular tourist spots. During golden week, trails, parking lots, and shuttle buses can be very busy.
- Late September or mid-October (outside golden week) is much less crowded, allowing more flexibility for half-day trekking without rushing.
3. Getting to Siguniang and Hailougou:
- From Chengdu, the easiest way is by car or private driver. Chengdu to Siguniang takes about 4–5 hours by road, and Chengdu to Hailougou is roughly 3–4 hours.
- Public transport options exist, such as long-distance buses from Chengdu to Rilong (Siguniang) or Hailougou, but schedules can be limited and less convenient for flexible trekking plans.
- Ctrip or other tour operators offer day trips or multi-day tours. Some allow short treks along designated trails, but many tours have fixed schedules, limiting independent exploration. It’s best to confirm with the tour provider whether half-day independent trekking is possible.
4. Trails and trekking experience:
- Siguniang has several popular trails: Rilong Village to Shuangqiao Valley (easy to moderate), Changping Valley (moderate), and Haizi Valley (moderate to difficult). Trails are well-marked, and visitors rarely get lost on main routes.
- Hailougou Glacier Park has well-maintained trails with shorter loops and scenic viewpoints. Half-day hikes are feasible here, with clear signage and easy accessibility.
- For independent half-day trekking, it is recommended to stick to marked trails, carry a map or use offline GPS apps, and check weather conditions in advance.
In summary, late September offers milder weather with fewer crowds, while mid-October offers peak autumn colors but cooler temperatures and potentially more tourists around golden week. Using private transport provides the most flexibility, while public transport or group tours are possible but more restrictive. Trails are generally well-maintained, and short half-day hikes are feasible for both Siguniang and Hailougou if you stick to the main paths.
