Hi, 3 of us will be staying in the Fairbanks area, Sept 7-11. We are looking for a scenic drive and were considering Denali Nat'l Park as our end destination. It is a 2 1/2 hour 1 way drive, how long is the drive through the park from the entrance? We would like to get out and walk around the park for an hour or so before heading back and were wondering what the drive time is. If it adds too much drive time is there a spot we should not miss before turning around for our drive back to Fairbanks. If there is a more scenic drive we should consider instead we are open to suggestions. Thanks for your time.
Driving from Fairbanks to Denali National Park is a fantastic way to experience Alaska’s scenic interior. The drive to the park entrance via the Parks Highway (AK-3) is approximately 2.5 hours one-way, covering around 120 miles. This route is scenic in itself, passing through rolling hills, rivers, and glimpses of the Alaska Range as you approach the park.
Once you reach the Denali National Park entrance, the road inside the park is the 92-mile (one-way) Park Road. Private vehicles are allowed only up to mile 15 (Savage River area), after which access requires a guided tour bus or shuttle. The drive from the entrance to mile 15 typically takes around 45–60 minutes without extended stops. If you plan to park and walk around for about an hour, you should budget roughly 2–2.5 hours for the in-park drive and hike, plus the return drive to Fairbanks.
Considering the round-trip drive from Fairbanks and time in the park, you’re looking at a total of approximately 7–8 hours, making it feasible for a day trip if you start early.
Recommended stops if you need to limit time:
If you want a scenic alternative or shorter drive, consider:
Overall, if you plan to enter the park, spend an hour walking near Savage River, and return to Fairbanks, it’s manageable as a full day trip. Starting around 7–8am will give you plenty of daylight and time to enjoy the scenery without feeling rushed.
