Sedona Oct 23-27

this is probably a captain obvious question, but do crowds thin out at all in Oct? I have been in Sept and first part of Oct and traffic is a nightmare. I love Sedona but really don't want to deal with trying to get anywhere. Any tips for staying out of fray?

October in Sedona is generally less crowded than the peak summer months and early October when tourists and locals take advantage of cooler weather. However, late October can still see moderate crowds, especially on weekends or during fall foliage peaks.

If your goal is to avoid traffic and crowds, there are several strategies you can use to enjoy Sedona more peacefully:

  • Visit popular trails early or late: For famous hikes like Cathedral Rock, Devil’s Bridge, or Bell Rock, aim for early morning starts before 8 AM or later in the afternoon. This avoids the mid-day rush and hot sun.
  • Choose weekdays over weekends: Friday through Sunday are usually busier, especially at trailheads and main scenic roads like the Red Rock Scenic Byway (SR 179) and Oak Creek Canyon.
  • Stay on less-traveled trails: Consider trails off the main corridors, such as Doe Mountain, West Fork Trail, or Fay Canyon, which tend to have fewer visitors.
  • Explore scenic drives at off-peak hours: Drive early in the morning or late afternoon on the Red Rock Scenic Byway or Schnebly Hill Road to enjoy vistas without traffic congestion.
  • Book accommodations slightly outside central Sedona: Staying in areas like Village of Oak Creek, Cornville, or Boynton Canyon reduces the need to navigate crowded central Sedona streets daily.

Additional tips:

  • Check parking availability at trailheads online if possible, as many have limited spaces that fill quickly even in late October.
  • Consider guided tours or shuttles to popular spots if you prefer to avoid driving and searching for parking.
  • Weekday mornings are the absolute best time to visit top viewpoints like Airport Mesa, Cathedral Rock, and Slide Rock State Park for photos with minimal crowds.

Overall, late October is a very good time for a more relaxed Sedona experience. By starting hikes early, avoiding weekends, and exploring some lesser-known trails and viewpoints, you can enjoy the beauty without the heavy traffic and congestion that can be stressful.
