My grown daughter and I will be in Sedona 4/13-4/18. We want to take a drive to the GC for the day as she has never been. On the way back, I wanted to stop in Flagstaff for dinner and do some stargazing at the Lowell Observatory before heading back to Sedona. I am seeing a few posts mentioning that people should not be driving after dark. Is this something we should be aware of? It's less than an hour back to our hotel in Sedona from the observatory. Is this side trip not a good idea?
Driving from Sedona to the Grand Canyon for a day trip is very doable, but there are a few considerations, especially if you plan to return after dark. The drive from Sedona to the South Rim is about 2.5 to 3 hours each way, depending on traffic and stops. Adding a stop in Flagstaff for dinner and Lowell Observatory makes for a long but enjoyable day.
Regarding night driving, most warnings refer to the rural areas around the Grand Canyon and some stretches along US-89 and AZ-180. Wildlife (especially deer) can be active at night, and some roads have minimal lighting. While the segment from Flagstaff back to Sedona is well-traveled and generally safe, caution is always advised if driving after dark.
Here’s a breakdown and tips for your side trip:
After the observatory visit, the drive back to Sedona is about 50-60 minutes. The road is well-maintained, but you’ll be driving through some dark stretches, so keep these in mind:
Overall, your plan is feasible. Many visitors do similar day trips safely. Just plan your timing so most driving occurs in daylight, and be mindful of wildlife and reduced visibility after dark.
