Late October - Early November

Planning to go end of October to early November. How's the park? Busy? Im planning to stay outside of the park, specifically Sierra Mountain Lodge. A coworker recommended it as its within budget. Would I still need to drive out early to avoid crowds? Would Tioga Road still be open? Snow? Any advice and tips is appreciated. Thank you.

Visiting Yosemite at the end of October into early November offers a quieter experience compared to the summer, but there are some seasonal considerations to keep in mind.

1. Crowds and Timing

The park is significantly less crowded during this time, especially on weekdays. Major viewpoints like Tunnel View, Glacier Point (if open), and Yosemite Valley floor will have fewer visitors, but weekends can still attract locals and photographers. You won’t need to arrive as early as in peak season, but early mornings are always the best for parking near popular trailheads and viewpoints.

  • Weekdays are very quiet; weekends slightly busier but manageable.
  • Arriving early in the morning ensures easier parking and softer light for photography.
  • Popular stops like Bridalveil Fall, Yosemite Falls, and El Capitan Meadow are accessible without long waits.

2. Driving and Road Access

Tioga Road (Highway 120 through the high country) is usually closed by late October due to snow, but this can vary depending on yearly conditions. Check the National Park Service (NPS) website or call the park for current road status before your trip. The main Yosemite Valley and Wawona areas remain open year-round.

  • Tioga Road: typically closed by late October; check NPS updates.
  • Glacier Point Road: may close due to snow; check current status.
  • All valley floor roads are open and easy to drive in a rental car.

3. Weather and Preparation

Temperatures start cooling considerably in late October, especially at night. Snow is possible at higher elevations, so bring warm layers, waterproof shoes, and check weather forecasts. Daytime temperatures in Yosemite Valley can range from the high 40s to 60s °F (8–16°C), with nights dipping near freezing.

  • Dress in layers: mornings and evenings can be chilly; afternoons may be mild.
  • Check for icy patches on trails in shaded areas.
  • Bring water, snacks, and a small daypack for comfort during short walks or easy hikes.

4. Lodging Outside the Park

Staying at Sierra Mountain Lodge is convenient for budget-conscious visitors. The drive into Yosemite Valley is about 45–60 minutes. Traffic is minimal during this season, so you won’t need to leave extremely early to avoid crowds. However, aim for mid-morning arrival to maximize daylight and access to viewpoints.

  • Morning departure allows full exploration without rushing.
  • Evening return gives flexibility; less congestion than summer months.
  • Fill up on gas and supplies before entering, as services inside the park may be limited.

Overall, late October to early November is a great time to enjoy Yosemite’s beauty with smaller crowds, though always check road and weather conditions before your visit to plan safely.
