We are planning to visit the above in Dec. It will be chancy weather-wise. I have a few questions and hope that this who have been there in Dec (or other months if relevant) can advise:
do the river cruises from Yangshuo to Xingping still run I. Dec?
these cruises are mainly cater to internal tourists- anyone know if they provide guide or narration on-board? We understand Chinese and would love intro to the various scenes
how and where do one go see and take photos of the commorants fishermen at Xingping?
are there any hotels recommended that provide hearing in Dec in Xingping?
Thanks in advance
Visiting Yangshuo and Xingping in December is possible, but it’s important to plan with weather considerations in mind. December is cooler and sometimes misty, which can affect visibility for photos but can also create atmospheric scenery along the Li River.
Regarding river cruises from Yangshuo to Xingping:
- The cruises generally still operate in December, though schedules may be slightly reduced compared to peak season. It’s best to confirm with your hotel or local tour operators a day or two in advance.
- Most river cruises cater to domestic tourists and the on-board commentary is typically in Chinese. If you understand Chinese, you will get a good introduction to the scenery and landmarks along the river.
- International tourist-oriented cruises are rare; if you prefer English commentary, consider private boat hires where your guide can provide explanations.
For photographing the cormorant fishermen in Xingping:
- The best time is early morning, around sunrise, when fishermen set out with their cormorants on bamboo rafts.
- You can access vantage points from the riverbank or small hills around Xingping town for wide shots of the river with fishermen and karst peaks.
- Alternatively, a private boat from Xingping pier can get you closer for better shots without disturbing the fishermen.
Regarding hotels with heating in December:
- Xingping is small but there are a few boutique hotels and guesthouses that provide heating, especially those targeting domestic winter travelers.
- Some recommended options include:
- Xingping River View Guesthouse – known for heating in winter rooms and riverside views.
- Ally’s House or Xingping Courtyard Hotel – provide heaters and cozy accommodations during colder months.
- It’s advisable to confirm directly with the hotel about heating availability before booking, as not all properties provide it during off-season.
In summary, the key is to check the cruise schedules and hotel heating options, plan photography for early mornings, and be prepared for cool, possibly misty weather which can enhance the scenic quality but limit distant views.
