Power bank rules on connecting/international flights

I have read (and had confirmation from my airline) that powerbanks must have a "3C" stamp on them to fly on domestic flights within China. Does this apply for China-Hong Kong flights? I am flying from the UK to HK via Beijing and cannot find the rules on wheather this applies for China-HK flights as well. Thanks!

Regarding power banks on flights within China and to Hong Kong, here is a detailed breakdown:

Domestic Flights within China:

  • Power banks carried on domestic flights must have a "3C" certification stamp, indicating that they meet Chinese safety standards.
  • The capacity limit is generally 100Wh per device for carry-on; some airlines may allow up to 160Wh with prior approval.
  • Power banks must always be carried in the cabin (carry-on baggage) and cannot be checked in.

International Flights from China to Hong Kong:

  • China-Hong Kong flights are treated as international flights, even if operated by a Chinese carrier. Therefore, the domestic "3C" certification requirement is usually not strictly enforced by Hong Kong authorities.
  • However, the airline may still apply its domestic rules when departing from a mainland airport. It is safest to carry a 3C-certified power bank to avoid any check issues at Beijing airport.
  • International aviation safety rules still apply regarding power bank capacity:
    • Devices under 100Wh can typically be carried freely in cabin baggage.
    • Devices between 100Wh and 160Wh may need airline approval.
    • Devices over 160Wh are generally prohibited.

Practical Tips:

  • Always carry the power bank in your carry-on bag, not in checked baggage.
  • Ensure your power bank clearly displays its capacity (in Wh or mAh) and certification markings.
  • Check with both your departing airline and connecting airline if you have concerns, especially for flights originating in China and connecting internationally.
  • When in doubt, use a 3C-certified power bank under 100Wh to guarantee compliance with all Chinese domestic and international transit rules.

In summary, while the "3C" stamp is mainly a domestic requirement, bringing a certified power bank is the safest approach for flights connecting from China to Hong Kong. Capacity limits and cabin-only rules still apply.
